All good points, the owner has not owned long and could give little guidance and has no manuals for it either. But I was operating in a field and for comparison my FT is always locked in and it was night and day in turning radius. This is not such a concern to me in itself but I was afraid that is might be a sign of further problems.
The HST had creep; let off the pedal and it drifted on even on level ground. Also to keep from drifting on a hill on takeoff the HST pedal had to be engaged to keep it from drifting off when the brake was released which was impossible with both the brake and HST pedal on the same side.
The range selector was hard to get into gear grinding excessively even with low RPM on several tries even on level ground. The HST response seemed sluggish even at RPM well over 2000.
Overall I was left with the feeling that something wasn't right and stopped at a dealer to try out an HST tractor with 1000 hours (admittedly smaller) and it did not need the RPM cranked up so high and the HST was smoother in all function.
