3-Point Hitch massey ferguson 178 3 point won't lift weight

We have a massey Ferguson 178 that will lift a normal implement but nothing heavy weight. We tried to use the 3 point with a boom to lift a cow that's down and wouldn't lift her 2 feet off the ground. We then tried to take a motor out of a truck. It would barrely lift a 300 lb motor. Any help to what would be causing this would be appriciated.

Thanks for the reply and info. I was thinking something internal was the problem but wasn't sure. Don't know anything about this tractor was bought at an auction some time ago by my great uncle, and was hoping for something simple wrong with it.

Can you tell me how the boom is fitted to the tractor ??.
If it is as per normal that is two points connected to the lift arms and the toplink connected to the toplink bracket the one with the three holes ,put it on the lowest one,or if possible fit it to the long grandfather pin which is on the final drive housing.
