Massey Ferguson 390T
Not sure where to put this, so fingers crossed. I am an old member who just re-registered. My 1992 MF 390 is making weird rumbling noises. It's done about 6,000 hours despite what is on the taco. The rumbling is intermittent and most apparent (sometimes!) when cutting revs to tick over. It appears to come from the front of the tractor. A visiting mechanic pointed out that the water pump sounded bad and it might be easier to diagnose the problem if that was replaced. OK, he was right, the water pump was bad and has been replaced. No change in the noise. Hydraulic oil and filters have also been replaced as has the engine oil and filters. There was no metal in the oil. I also took the fan belt off and checked the fan and pulleys and everything works freely by hand as it should. No rubbing. I have gone around the outside of the tractor with a video camera so you can listen to the noises. It is the same in all gears. When I hear the noise, a caption "NOISE HERE" pops up in the videos. The sound is more evident in tick over, particularly when slowing down from mid revs. Can anyone recognise this noise? The dealers are happy for me to put the tractor in when they will tear it apart and sort it, but transport alone is expensive and that's before they have even picked up a spanner! I am hoping I won't be paying for their next holiday! Anyone? The rodeo is at
. Thank you!

Resonance in the muffler? My hearing ain't what it used to be, so hard to tell what you mean by "rumble". Only other sound I hear is a tick that may be coming from the rocker arms.

Thanks for the reply. No, it's not the muffler. How do I describe rumble? Like the sound of heavy traffic in the far distance? You should be able to hear it when the caption (noise here) pops up. I can understand about the hearing. I wear two aids and still have trouble.:)

does it have a/c
Also have you taken belts off to see if it stops?
You could run it for awhile without the belts those things will not overheat very fast

The other thing is maybe bearings out of balancer but they usually make noise all the time makes more of a whirring noise
And goes up and down as you rev it usually only last 3or 4K hours for front mounted balancer mid mounts never had one go south so

No a/c (air conditioning?). I have taken the fan belt off and everything moves as it should.

I am not running the tractor now. The balancer has been mentioned before. The noise seems to start when slowing down from mid range to tick over, but it is intermittent, the worst kind of fault to locate! The noise may be there at higher revs, just drowned out by engine noise, it is difficult to tell.

I suspect the noise you are refering to is from the hydraulic or power steering pump. Since it is intermittant, I also think it may be a resonance type noise.
suggestion: turn steering wheel from lock to lock to see if there is noise. When the noise first occured the steering wheel was being moved.

I will check that out, thanks.

Have you got one of those automotive stethoscope contraptions to try & isolate where exactly the noise is coming from? Relatively cheap tool, but helps isolate component noises from "general" noise. If you need something that works with hearing aids, they are more expensive but both types available on amazon.
