Lineman -- what do the dealers say about this phenomenon ? Being common to many 4608 machines they must know of it. Nettles, Rexroads or Lemons ?

My MF2660 has no such chatter but is 6 years old too and does not have the hydraulic shifter mechanism that I assume most/all 4608s have. I had a JD with the "power reverser" and it had no such noise.

Surely some of the dealers know what the noise is.

Only talked to one dealer and they said if it doesn't get worse don't worry about it. It's definitely a common thing on that series from research. Gonna make it to other dealers and see if I can get a "for sure" answer

Good. Let us know what you find.

I do NOT believe this is the same noise but quite a few different models of MF tractors have what I call a "clanking noise." I can produce it on my MF2660 by intentionally running with the position control too high "into the edge of the regenerate area." At one point it was so loud and dangerous sounding that old experienced diesel mechanics ran to the machine saying "Shut it down quick !" That was about when I found out how to avoid the clanking by simply moving the position lever a little lower and setting the top stop to avoid it. If one listens carefully, a very mild version of that clanking is almost always present. I have talked with many experienced dealers and service mechanics. All agree that they have heard it on many models of MF basic chassis design tractors. Like your "clutch chatter" noise mine never gets worse. Just stays around. Those folks say don't worry about it. The nature of the thing.

The best explanation I ever got (from a MF service mechanic with over 30 yrs experience) was: There is a shaft or pin that prevents rotation of the hydraulic pump for the 3pt lift. That shaft must have some slight slack in order to allow installation/removal. When not under rotational stress (mostly at idle) the pump vibrates against that pin and causes the "clanking." Being deep in the bowels of the very heavy parts of the chassis, the noise can be way worse than impressive. At its' worst you might think a rod was loose in the engine !! Now, under control and under "normal" circumstances one might never notice it. I have over 330 hours on the 2660 now and it has not gotten worse.

The noise you are hearing on the 4600 Series in higher gears under load originates from the damper mounted to the flywheel. The sound or "chatter" is then carried thru to the transmission. Have seen a few of these - it will not cause any long term issues and does not affect performance. It can be annoying to those with cab tractors since the cab is basically a big speaker box and amplifies the noise. Adding insulation to the firewall and under the cab will help reduce the noise some. You can often replicate the noise by simulating a load simply by applying the brakes while driving the tractor.

Thanks for responding to this thread...you seem to be very knowledgeable about masseys..at least now I know what it is for sure Thanks again

There is supposed to be a revised version of the flywheel and clutch or related parts. Never done one, haven't heard a complaint out of our customers yet. I have heard tale of this issue though.

my 4610 made it and a couple of my neighbors make it too my new 4710 does not its smooth and quiet.i put down dyna mat and extra insulation in the floor to try to help and it did some but I finally broke down and traded.mine would make the noise even worse when pto was on like when cutting hay with disc mower it was awful.

Are you still happy with your 4710? Thinking about going to a 4700 myself
