massey ferguson overheat

I am looking at a 2004 Massey 492 = 90hp MFWD... it had radiator failure and they continued to run it and got and overheat. The engine starts but makes internal noise, not a hiss like a head gasket. Also the left rear brake was locked and the dealer removed the linkage to move the tractor. Does this sound like a linkage problem rather than a wet brake locked up. This is a repo being offered at a low price. Any ideas welcome. Thanks, George M.

Does it make a loud knocking sound?? Does it get quieter as it warms up or not? Does it have clean oil? Is the coolant free of oil?

you'd think that if it was worth fixing, the dealer would do just that.

In my experience, diesels do not handle an overheat situation very well at all.

Likely results of overheating a diesel include (but are not limited to) a cracked head or block, broken rings, scored cylinders, bad bearings.... I doubt that damage would be limited to a blown head gasket, but you could get lucky....

Personally, I'd be real careful about buying it, unless you know your way around an engine and could justify the cost of an overhaul or perhaps even a replacement.

In addition to other questions, when it runs, if you remove the oil fill cap, is there a lot of positive air pressure in the engine? Oil smoke coming out the exhaust?
