Massey Ferguson1010 3 cyl diesel overheating

I have a 1010 as well and have had issues in the past with overheating . I flushed the rad and cleaned all of the dust/crud out of the fins and it is not overheating now! I replaced the coolant with a long life diesel coolant and I keep checking in the top of the rad to see if the tubes are plugging up,and so far so good! I suspect that the rads they used were a little undersized? But that just a guess on my part!

The problem is if there's a clog or blockage an additive won't make it around the system. The garden hose is more a test for fluids going through than it is for any cleaning .

Adding a radiator system flush to a system that already isn't circulating correctly doesn't likely fix the issue.

oh ow... so if an additive wont do it and garden hose won't do it then really doesn't leave me many options.

Well that's certainly encouraging news. I sure hope that is/was my problem... The guy is coming to put my rad in tomorrow and I will know. I only have the regular Prestone antifreeze here. ifit works and doesn't over heat I will drain t and fill it with diesel antifreeze... A friend is insisting that the small diesels are bad for cracking heads from overheating. Of course that has me worried.
I am 86 and I bought the tractor new in the 80's... It has been an awesome tractor.. blew snow every winter as well as tilled the gardens..

Yeah, you have a tough one. I'm betting when the refurbished radiator goes on all will be OK. Before putting any kind of antifreeze back in I would test it as follows:

You have to get it inside a halfway warm garage to do anything. Use the garden hose semi-sealed to one of the radiator hoses headed for the engine ('sealed" with some foam rubber, even an old sock) and force water through the block and back out the top of the radiator. That will tell you if there is any obstruction. If no obstruction and you already have a new water pump on it, put the cap back on and reconnect the radiator hose. Let it run a while and see if you can get "normal" hot water flowing, enough to open the thermostat. Just let her run a while and it will either overheat or it wont. Based on all the other comments I'm sure by now you've got a good tight belt running the fan and water pump and blown out any air obstruction (though with the cleaned out radiator that should be good.)
If you still have unsolved issues have someone do a compression test & verify your cylinders are all about the same which proves you don't have a blown head gasket.

Only after this testing would I put antifreeze back in. In my opinion any standard antifreeze will work fine and I see no need for any special antifreeze. Hopefully all will be OK at this point.

well looks like problem solved.. got a tarp around it and a heater.. ran water through as suggested.. put antifreeze in it and ran it for an hour.. no over heating yet. blew some snow and worked it for a long time and no signs of over heating yet.. hopefully it keeps on without heating..
Thanks all for your help and suggestions. you were a great help.. according to the forecast we have some nicer weather coming mid week. So I will drain it again and refill it with new antifreeze....Thanks again and Happy Thanksgiving to my American friends..

You too Johnny 034 ! I'm assuming these good results were after the cleaned out radiator was put back on. I expected that would be the case. I just did the math and figured out that 34 is the year you were born. You are running 9 years ahead of me ! Call me 043 if you want. I hope I'm still fiddling with and enjoying my tractors and implements when I am 86 !

I’m a young’un born in ‘40. I have had a 1010 since 1985 and it still runs like a champ. Not as pretty as it was 45 years ago but it's dependable. I had a serious overheating problem when I used the belly mower with it years ago. I had two problems: one was the fan belt was loose but the real problem was grass debris from mowing blocking the radiator. I started to blow the radiator out from both the front and back sides, during and after every use and that eliminated the problem. That happened in 1986. The 16 HP engine is working pretty hard whenever a load is put on it so proper cooling is critical.

Workstead,
You have hit upon the two most common problems associated with a heat gauge showing too hot-loose belt and externally plugged radiator.
The fan should roar or buzz at full engine speed. With the engine stopped, try to turn the fan blades by hand . If you can slip the belts, there is a problem.
On a dark day or in the shop, put a light behind the radiator, by the fan. Look thru from the front. If you can’t see light, the radiator needs cleaning until you CAN see light thru it.
Of course, there are many other reasons for overheating, but these two are the most common-and easily checked!

Thanks for the kind words... I just don't want to give up yet.. I really love my 1010, it's been my right hand man for 35 years. front nd loader I couldn't be without and of course the 48" snow blower and tiller. Having a bit of a problem getting on and off but once I'm on there I just love it.. thinking of giving it a paint job come spring..
