Matching tractors to acreage

/ Matching tractors to acreage #11
I have seen folks with an Industrial size tractor on less then 5 acres needing a larger tractor and folks on a thousand acres with nothing more then a compact that was more then sufficient. Trying to match up tractor size to land size has absolutely no correlation. As GlueGuy says, match up the job to be done with tractor size. I can't imagine moving 1000 yds of soil with a compact any more then mowing my lawn with a Cat D9. If your mowing acerage, get a tractor that can pull at least a 72" mower for no matter how much you love driving your tractor mowing lots of land with to small of a mower gets to be a chore. Rat...

Hi ya
like others land and tractor Hp do in some cases get bigger most cases it's WHAT the tractor has to pull or run with PTO that dictates what Hp people have ,also time/weather can come in to it aswell...say i had 50 acres and did my own hay and plowing my baler may need 70 Hp so the baler dictates the size i buy ..on the other hand if i only topped fields and pushed snow around 30 odd Hp may do the job ok with less money outlayed ..or you may have a market garden needing a fast turn around of crops so ya have Hp to pull gear faster ,i think a lot of factors come into size land size dose have some input but gear and time are the bigger factors
catch ya

For me the paradigm is how MANY tractors for various acreage. Tractors are likes hands; 2 are more than twice as handy as one. When you consider tire types, tying up one machine with mowers, backhoes or doing a job that needs serial tasks such as spray/ till then plant. Getting a job quickly done as the weather permits, especially planting, is important. The second tractor need only be a reasonable used machine. I find a dedicated lawn mower allows me to use more aggresive tires and heavier tractor for the other work without all that switching of implements.

I agree completely - a very handsome and efficient dairy farm near here has a tractor for every major implement. Some small, some big. None of the tractors are new - but all are clean and well-maintained (and mostly green). Owner says it's the best economy to have every implement ready to use whenever it's needed.

That's the way I currently operate - having three tractors. One dedicated for loader use, one dedicated for brush hogging, tilling, plowing, disking and one for finish mowing and maintaining the lawn. All three tractors are the same make and model, so that makes it nice for parts, etc. But, maintenance and upkeep of three (older) tractors is a time consuming process, for sure. Looking to sell all three and replace them with one (new) compact.
