I ringed our pole barn 40x63 with used pallet racking and steel mesh decking. Mainly 42" deep 8' & 10' uprights, 6-8-10 wide cross beams. Freestanding on the concrete floor. Depending on cross beams each shelf can carry 2K-5K lbs. I put the lighter stuff up high & heavier stuff dozer engine (3 cyl) dozer transmission etc down low. Implements & wheeled stuff park under bottom shelves to maximize floor square footage. Got a couple of pick up loads of used wood pallets. Everything is on pallets so easy in & out, misc lumber bits are in boxes on pallets.
Changing config & shelf heights to adapt for different things is a snap!
Racks have been up for 2 years & still cannot think of anything better.
Last point the decking is not solid surfaced so varmits are less likely to try nesting as compared to the old wood & plywood shelves.
That rough cut once dried out makes good work bench structure.
