MAX 22 No Start or Starts and dies

My Max 22 starts and then dies as soon as the key is released but sometimes it will stay running for 20 seconds or so then it shuts off just like you turned the key off. I'm thinking bad fuel silonoid or maybe ignition switch? There's three wires to the silonoid. What wires should have power? Is there a wiring diagram online? NOTE: Seat switch is bypassed. PTO"s are off.

Hi and welcome.

I am not familiar with the Max 22. Solenoid is a good start. I trust you checked the fuse for the solenoid.
Others here should be able to help with finding a wiring diagram.

Running for 20 seconds then shutting off may not be the solenoid.

I'll replace the fuse but sometimes it runs for 20 seconds so I wasn't thinking fuse. I just pulled the ignition switch out and tested for power. It's a three wire switch and I have power in, power out with key on and power to the starter when cranking so it's fine. The electric fuel pre-pump is also running. If you start it and hold the key in the crank position it starts and stays running until you let the key spring back into "run". Then it dies. Kind of hard on the starter I know but that's a clue. I'm still thinking fuel silonid. I made it back to the barn 20 seconds at a time. I'm glad it's not way down in the woods dead.

OH I did learn one thing! "silonoid" is spelled "Solenoid". Been spelling it wrong for years

Just checked fuse. It's good. Replaced it anyway but tractor will not even crank with fuse removed so I know was good.

If you fuel supply is good: filter etc, then it sounds like a bad fuel sol.
There are 3 wires: 2 power and one ground if i remember correctly.
There are two circuts, one gets power while cranking that pulls the sol.(turns fuel on)
The second circut is the hold circut which keeps the sol applied(fuel on) once key is released to run postion.

Not sure but it's a max not an Emax.

Dealer seems to think it's a solenoid also so he ordered one in. Will post what fixed it when after trip to dealer.

We have had a handful of those go bad in the last couple of years (we sell a ton of these Max and 16 series tractors), and every time but once when these symptoms arose, it was a bad fuel solenoid. Never had a replacement one go bad. Johnson Auto gave a great explanation. It sounds like the "start" part of the solenoid is working correctly, but the "hold it in while it runs" part is not. I think the initial amperage for the start portion is higher, then to hold it in while running draws very little amps. Easy fix, just takes 5 minutes to swap out.
