I'm dealing with that very thing right now, you wouldn't believe the crap I've cleaned out of my tank. It isn't the water, but the microbes that thrive in the environment between the water and fuel. They eventually will form a film that will clog your filters.
Often referred to as algae. Us Biol-Cide, Power Service BioKleen or Soltron to prevent it.
