My understanding is the CP4 is highly sensitive to water in the fuel, where the CP3 is not as sensitive.

However, they're both extremely sensitive in contrast prior methods of providing fuel to the motor.

I've read that the cam follower can end up a bit sideways, sending shrapnel through the system. Somewhat like the new hydraulic lifters in the Cummins.

YEP Like 90* sideways. CP 3 is just a more robust unit. CP 3 has higher flow volume as well. It just doesn't make as much pressure.

Some cases it is so violent when the failure happens, it can break the engines cam / crank gears.
The scary thing is the engine dies suddenly and no chance of restart. That can lead to some bad situations.

Ford is in it now too.

How many Fewer CP3 failures on less well maintained CP3 equipped diesels built all the way back to 2001?

The Forged steel 3 cylinder CP 3 has a better reliability record than the 2 cylinder Aluminum CP 4 It also does not contaminate the entire injection system if a failure does happen.

CP 4 failure rates are reported as being over 7%. That number will undoubtedly trend upward as they get as old as the 20 year old CP3's that are still plugging along.

Thing is, Ram only ran it for a few years.
Ram also replaced any CP-3 failed or not, free of charge.
Ford waited until they broke and ran them much longer than Ram
Thats a big difference.
I was given a loaner truck while they did mine (2 days)

What made Cp4 fail on Rams and not fords or chevy?


I believe you are confusing failure rate with replacement rate.

Ram replaced all CP-4 pumps, broken or working.
Ford only replaced them after they failed and left the owner stuck on the roadside.

That means Ram replaced all pumps, Ford is doing them one at a time as they break, which creates more angry Ford owners & future Ram owners ;)

Some people with Rams were able to get their cp4 pumps replaced quickly while other's waited for 7 months. Sometimes it comes down to parts supply, the dealer, and just dumb luck instead of who made the truck.

As an owner of a truck that received a replacement, my tech told me that post covid, there wasn’t enough CP-3 pumps in world inventory, so Ram replaced failed pumps first, then took trucks like mine in with working pumps as the replacement campaign got going.

Still lots of Fords running around with future “glitter bombs” on board.

My dealer told me the Ram replacement campaign was wrapping up this past summer. They said they sold over 500 of the CP-3 trucks and they were done with the ones they sold.

The CP-4 definitely ran higher pressure. My truck started in less than a second with the CP-4. The newer lower pressure pump takes longer to start.
