maybe upgrading from a M5040 to a M7060 cab

You know - I've heard the old saw - time and time again. "More gears are better". So you have a 4 speed or 8 speed or 12 speed - what is so dam wrong about having to go a little bit slower to obtain a good cut? What is it that drives some folks head-long into oblivion and the faster the better???? Are we all in some kind of race to get our jobs done as fast as possible. I like to think - now that I'm retired I can slow down a bit and enjoy the flowers. You know - the end is coming sooner than you think..............

There is nothing wrong with going a little slow if you have to because you bought the wrong tractor. Enjoy the birds. If you want to spend that kind of money and make do, more power to you. It’s the wrong tractor for what he wants to do.

respectfully disagree. the op is considering a perfectly adequate upgrade that will do just fine for his described use. again,. sharp cutters are the key... sure a 12 heavy duty version would be nice but an overkill just to have it.

if your advice of having to have the 12 sp merely for bush hogging, then why don't most people have the option?
but do agree w/you that whatever the choice, taking one's time at a given task is safer and probably healthier in the long run for the operator. best regards

Yes, IMHO there are a lot of people with the wrong tractor. That’s why people come on here to ask for advice. Heck, some of us have even bought the wrong tractor! Don’t ask me how I know.

That’s the perfect tractor if you are mainly doing FEL work and moving big bales/rounds of hay on the FEL or 3 pt, running a manure spreader etc. That would make a great general purpose equestrian/cattle operations tractor. Heck, I could make that tractor work fine with my grapple and logging winch. There’s plenty that tractor could do well.

But if anyone on here recommends this as being a good tractor for a person who’s main objective is mowing 20 acres either hasn’t really mowed 20 acres on a regular basis or is trying to unload their 8 speed version so THEY can upgrade or make a sale.

The reality of the situation is I don’t give a rats behind if he buys the tractor or not. It won’t impact me in the slightest. But I do maintain 45 acres, 25-35 is mowed on a regular basis and would never recommend the 8 speed for his needs. God help him if he decides to get into haying. There is a reason you can find the 8 speed and not the 12 speed used.

My Ford is an 8spd. I mow with it. Wish it was 16.

My Kubota is 12spd. I mow with it. Wish it was 24.

I'm in no hurry to get anywhere. More speeds are more about less stress, not racing thru life. :confused3:

Well said. It's human nature to want more. IMO, the M7060 the OP is looking at will serve him well. The M7060 will look a lot larger with the cab and AG tires, but the footprint and weight are almost equal to earlier 50hp AG tractors. I say, go for it. I purchased the M7060HD12 for use with a grain drill and slow grunting grapple and FEL work. I think he will love the new tractor, it really is well made. The new tractors with DPF need to operate higher RPM's anyway. I have been working mine mowtly around 1500rpm.

Well dang. Didn't expect this much of a response. I want to thank you all for your input. This past Sunday. I washed and wax my old tractor and got it ready for the dealer to looked at it. He liked it and we was able to get the deal done today. I am going to pick up the new tractor Thursday afternoon and I am Planning on cutting 17 acres Friday with it. Its in two different location. The 8 speed is fine with me. 12 would have been nice but for the price. I can live with it. i am not planing to bail hay anytime soon. Here is a pic on my old beast.

had the m7040 8 sp for a while w/6' hog. you will be fine with the 8 sp machine & 7' hog. good match. keeping the cutters sharp to me is just as important as fretting over ground speed, just use the low range if needed....
don't fret over the 12 vs 8 sp... perhaps if you were drilling seed, etc you'd notice the difference. sounds like a good move on your part
