What engine did you work on that comsumed 15 gpm of diesel fuel???? Our Cat C32 V-12's only consume around 40 gph. Philip.

Hey Leonz, ever remember the engine you worked on that consumed 15 gpm? Just curious? Philip.

Phillip, it was miss-typing error on my part "Whoopsie":ashamed:

The smaller Duetz V-12 air cooled engines consume 15 gallons per hour or more if turbo charger equiped at high idle;

The larger Sulzers use that much fuel per minute or more in ocean service, the older water cooled Mercedes V-12 burns a little less in snow clearer service, and the Duetz Engines-V-12-24 used in ocean service and for electric generation use much more fuel.

I dont honestly know how many of the large air cooled Duetz engines are left in Ocean and Generator set service these days as they had several hundred placements in Europe for electrical service and sea based engine use.

The folks that sell fuel to the Cunard line when the QE2 docks in New York
do not bother with gallon measurements, they measure the fuel delivered in tons when the fuel barge shows up!!

They have to refuel and resupply in 24 hours in port to maintain a 5 day crossing schedule the year round.

The Cat gen sets. used for power in the the Caterpillar 100-400 ton trucks and others average 56 gallons per hour or more in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming

The smallest EMD's or GE built locomotive engines consume 15 gallons per hour at low idle but for one more example.

It always reminds me how small we are in the scheme of things when you see a railroad mechanic crawl out of the cyinder when the heads off on a big inline EMD OR GE diesel engine.

My apologies for the typing error.

Well she came back this morning at about 9. They said swapped out a relay in the
dash and checked every wire connection to make sure they were tight. Started right
up on the rollback and they parked it. Wife put it in the shed until 3pm, she hit the
glow plugs until the light went off, it clicked and she said it didn't take 1/2 a second
and it was running like a champ. It looks like they found the problem. They didn't even
charge to pick it up and bring back which is not covered under the warranty, she asked
what we owed and they said we didn't owe a thing they were just glad it was running right,
can't hardly beat that !

Thanks everyone!

That's the difference between a good dealer and someone who sells tractors. Plus now you can see what the rest of us were saying about starting up very quickly in cold weather.

I'm amazed at the difference. I was in the shed when she cranked it today. It
literally started in less than a 1/2 second, almost no smoke, no rattling, just
smooth but it was close to 40 degrees inside. All is well for now. Now she's thinking
of selling her JD X720 for a Kubota to mow with, I tried to tell her to get a diesel
when she bought it.
