Exactly. There are no jobs in inner-cities for uneducated poor people with ZERO work experience. As I mentioned before, that was not the case 30 years ago. You could get a decent paying factory job with no high school diploma. Those days are gone. Raising minimum wage will not solve anything.

30 years ago? The US economy was in much much worse shape 30 years ago. I'm sure unemployment was figured a little differently than it is today but even taking that into consideration, the economy was in the crapper back thenn

Unemployment was much higher when I graduated highschool 31 years ago.

"The peak of the recession was in November and December 1982, when the nationwide unemployment rate was 10.8%, highest since The Great Depression. As of 2013, it is still the highest since the 1930s.[8] In November, West Virginia and Michigan had the highest unemployment with 16.4%. Alabama was in third with 15.3%. South Dakota had the lowest unemployment rate in the nation, with 5.6%. Flint, Michigan had the highest unemployment rate of all Metro areas with 23.4%.[9] In March 1983, West Virginia's unemployment rate hit 20.1%. In the Spring of 1983, thirty states had double digit unemployment rates. When Reagan won re-election in 1984, the latest unemployment numbers (August 1984) showed West Virginia still had the highest in the nation, 13.6%, with Mississippi in second with 11.1%, and Alabama in third with 10.9%.[10]"

I guess we have a tendancy to look back fondly and forget some of the bad parts. I know I do. Don't forget about the inflation rate that reached 13.5% in 1980 and the prime lending rate that went over 20%.

Fast food cost has risen a lot in the last couple years. I Can eat much better food for the same cost in a local non chain restaurant. I think for the fast food worker skill level they are overpaid. they always mess up your order.

Went out for lunch the other day, one day with everyone at work to a local place, the next with the wife and kids to Applebees. The burger at the local place was the same price as the Applebees one, but was MUCH better and it came with a lot more fries...

When they had brail on the drive through menu board a few years back, I thought I'd have some fun. It was 9 p.m., so I put my order in and put my sunglasses on, then I took a piece of 1/2" PVC plastic pipe I had and drove up to the window to pay while tapping the pipe on the wall of the building...you wanna see a kid come unglued? I tapped the drive up window with the pipe, asked to see a manager. The manager was all nervous as I said I'd like to continue over to the parking area to eat, and would he guide me over there because I would have to leave the wall and have nothing to tap on. As I drove to park, I could see the entire staff watching me...I couldn't hold it any more and busted out laughing and let the cat out of the bag. They were all pretty ashamed that they were so gullable, hahahaha.

What's that? I'm hungry.

The picture below should be enough to curb your appetite for a Krystal Burger.

burger.jpg

If that doesn't work, it looks like you will have to travel.

From Krystal (restaurant) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Krystal restaurants, both company-owned and franchised, operate in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee. There is also a Krystal in Bristol, Virginia, (which lies on the Tennessee-Virginia border), and one in West Memphis, Arkansas (directly across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee ). Krystal has also operated several restaurants in Texas over the years. Krystal is often compared to the Midwestern restaurant chain White Castle, but other than the Atlanta, Georgia, Bowling Green, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee markets, the two restaurants' market areas do not generally overlap.

Consumer Tip: Don't bother to make the trip.;)

As I recall, in the early 80s, I was 21-24, living at my parent's home, going to tech school earning two associate degrees, working a full-time 36hr job of two 10hr shifts and two 8 hour shifts, a part-time job driving refurbed army trucks out of AM General to rail spurs a few days per week, and lifeguarding a couple nights a week, plus dating my future wife. So, I had three jobs, school and a girlfriend. I was paying my way as I went. And in 1985 we paid 3 points to get the mortgage of our first house down to 12.5%. So I do remember those times very well. I got through them with the support of my parents, my girlfriend, hard work, and NO BABIES UNTIL I COULD AFFORD THEM. And, I had health insurance with my full-time job. The problem today is there are no full-time jobs for uneducated people. Raising the minimum wage for part-time employees will not resolve that fact. Employers will cut their hours to below 25 per week to avoid having to pay benefits for them. They'll be forced to buy high-deductible insurance plans that they have to pay themselves, but they won't save up the deductible to have when they do need it. That's a fact. No one has mentioned that. They won't save up for the deductible. No poor people save for that. Heck, most middle class people don't do that. Then its a huge shock when you have $5k to pay out of your pocket. More government assistance will be needed to dig folks out of the deductible hole. The whole thing is a mess. And it seems that I don't have a solution. I don't. I'm not trying to carp on the bad stuff, but that's all there is. There's no way out. There's too many poor people with no education, no good paying jobs, concentrated in high population settings, looking for a way out. Mandating that corporations (and that means all businesses) pay them double wages is not the way out. I don't know what the way out is. I personally think its too late. Game over. Civil unrest is just around the corner. YIKES! Bleak, but YIKES!

I remember I could get a double chess burger, fries and milk shake for $1.05 at McDonald's working at my first real job making $350 a month gross pay. I think fast food has always been bad if you ate it three times a day as I did back then.

As to the price of food one factor I was reading is the Ethanol mandate effect. Huge now from 1970 was employment options due to manufacturing.

Fast food requires a lot of reading before purchasing. One honey mustard dipping sauce I noted was mainly high fructose corn syrup with 4x the calories of another restaurant's honey mustard sauce. They are use awful tomatoes it seems to me. :)

ObamaCare | Health Insurance Exchange
If you make between $11,505 to $46,021 you can buy subsidized private insurance in the state-based online marketplaces. If you make less than $15,302 you may qualify for Medicaid.

You may qualify for discounts to help pay for premiums if your income is from $15,302 to $46,021 for an individual and $31,155 to $93,700 for a family of four.

You can also find out if you qualify for extra subsidies to help with out-of-pocket costs or for government programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Plan.

The minimum wage, 7.25/hour, is $15,080/year at full time 40 hour weeks.

Anyone who has that annual income (or higher) and is over 26 years old (possible parent's plan inclusion) is surely either receiving Medicaid or subsidized private insurance. Since they are required to have insurance, "we" are required to subsidize it.

If an [Edit: low wage] employer pays some of the cost of health insurance, it shows up in the price of the products. If they do not, it shows up in the price of taxes. Either way, "we" pay for it. "We" always did pay for it with some tax money, and some medical care pricing that was high enough to cover those who could not pay.

If a given employer thinks cutting hours below the benefit threshold works for them, fine, but it does not have that great of an effect on the eventual health care costs. If an employer reduces staff hours that they actually need worked, for this benefit reason, they are creating additional part-time jobs to make up the difference. Hours needed is hours needed.

Why should the govt (tax payer) be involved in health care for any reason?

I worked my way thru high school and college working at a grocery store. At that time, insurance was free and actually covered about anything. I guess things are not what they used to be (early to mid 80's). They even had good profit sharing. I got a decent sized check when i quit!

I guess this post contradicts itself. I just don't understand what has caused the fundamental change in the last 30 years....but it does have to be the liberal's fault.
