Hello all . I read here somewhere a fellow questioning if a 3 pt dirt scoop was worth having ! He even thought he thought he could keep up with a shovel ! Ha Ha ! this fellow don`t think much of hiself :) A rear mounted dirt scoop might not be close to a front end loader . But I would not compare it even to john henry with a shovel ! Give me a break ! I`m sure that fellow never ever dug one cubic yard with a shovel ! Maybe not even a spoonful ! TNX

I moved tons of dirt with a Ford 3 pt dirt scoop. Used the scoop on everything from a Cub 154 LoBoy, Kubota L210 and finally a David Brown 990. Finally got a JD 2755 with a front end loader.

I also used a dirt soop yrs back and moved many loads of dirt. Every tool has it's use, how well it performs is up to the operator.

I had a neighbor that dig a pretty good size pond with one, but he'd be the 1st one to tell you it took him years of part time digging. I dont think I would tackle a job that big with a scoop myself.

Lots of roads were built using a slip and mules to move the dirt, as a matter of fact, that is how George Brown (of Brown & Root,Inc which is now KBR) got his start. He won or got some mules and slips in payment and started a road building firm that grew into a multi-national, multi-million dollar per year engineering and construction firm.

For building swales, a 3PH dirt scoop is hard to beat. If you want to remove dirt from a large area, you have to be really careful to not dig too deep on each pass. Expanding the trench wider and wider as you dig while keeping it shallow is the best method. If you get in a hurry and dig so deep the tractor leans too far, you may find you need differential braking or differential lock because the high wheel will lose traction. With the right technique and patience, you can move a lot of dirt.

With a nice sharp cutting edge on your scoop, it will make a nice block sod cutter. I cut St. Augustine sod with one and carefully put it down so that it looked like big 30" squares. Dirt scoops are very useful, but the truth is they will be used a lot less if you also have a FEL. With a backhoe also for trenching, I could sell my scoop and never miss it. Without a FEL and backhoe, it's a great tool, especially on a light tractor without 4WD.

Ford 8N, 3pt Ford dirt scoop, 7 years old, no live lift. Could fill on the move without stopping then carry to the elevated feed lot. Spent many, many hours doing that. Got real good at controlling the depth of the cut so to not stall the 8N. Also got good at setting the 3pt height and dumping so to scatter the load rather than create a big hump. All on the move of course!!!

Bought that scoop when my Dad retired and had his sale. Still have it today. Friend of mine just hit me up last week about borrowing it this Spring to use on his 861 Ford tractor.

Around here they were called Fresnos. During the East Texas oil boom in the '30's lots of mules and fresnos were used to dig sludge pits for the drilling mud.
