these "slips" or "fresnos" that you guys speak of, what are they? I am picturing the canvas(?) pouches that they drug with ropes.

Hello all . I read here somewhere a fellow questioning if a 3 pt dirt scoop was worth having ! He even thought he thought he could keep up with a shovel ! Ha Ha ! this fellow don`t think much of hiself :) A rear mounted dirt scoop might not be close to a front end loader . But I would not compare it even to john henry with a shovel ! Give me a break ! I`m sure that fellow never ever dug one cubic yard with a shovel ! Maybe not even a spoonful ! TNX

i hear ya. way before I had a loader I moved many many yards of dirt with a rear scoop when shaping up the backside of the pad for my house.. a yanmar 1700 did some of it..and an 8n did the rest of it.

We grew up using a three point dirt/pond scoop on our tractors, no one had front loaders then and if you wanted to dig, that was about it. We have some old small ponds on our farm that were dug by the previous owners with them.

We don't use ours any more, but they sure were handy in days gone by.

A fresno or slip was a scoop made of steel that was pulled by a team of mules. It had a long handle on the back that the teamster would use to angle the cutting edge into the dirt. When it was full he would pull back on the handle and the scoop would tilt back. The mules drug the slip along on its belly. When they got to where the dirt could be dumped the teamster would push the handle forward and the slip would dump. Very hard work.

Some parts of the country call them different names, but this is what I learned long ago in the SW US.

I knew Soundguy and TripleR would have history with a 3pt scoop.
