Measuring dirt

/ Measuring dirt #21
I'd forgotten that old formula.

Another factor that I find interesting is figuring out how many tons of rock you need for a road (or private driveway in my case). The tricky part is the quarries sell rock by the ton, and you calculate what you need by volume. The problem is converting from one to the other when the material varies in density. However, using ~~3000 lbs (or 1.5 tons) per cubic yard seems to come pretty close most of the time.
