Messy Grease Guns

I guess I'm /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

With the lip sticking out of on the bottom, if the plunger is pull out, how do you store it? If you raise it up so that the plunger clears then the hose isn't going to reach its holder. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Guess for now I'll stay with my methods of letting them drip. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Grease is about 90% oil and 10% thickener(lithium etc.) more or less depending on the type of thickener etc., the thickener acts basically like a sponge which in rolling type bearings is how they are lubricated, the grease acts as a reserve and bleeds oil which lubricates the bearing. Grease will bleed just setting in the tube and tends to increase when under pressure or at elevated temperatures. like EGON said the viscosity of the oil in the grease thins at higher temps and makes it easier to migrate. Amsoil GLC I've found bleeds quite readily out of the grease gun while Kendall SHP doesn't seem to but it's a calcium sulfonate grease.

If the plunger is sticking out, just shove it back in, all the grease guns that I have, if you turn the T-handle it will disengage from the plunger inside the gun and you can shove just the rod down into the grease in the gun and the T-handle will stay in.

I've never experienced this and didn't even reailize it was a problem. How long does a tube of grease last for you guys?

I go through a tube and a half on my backhoe and a tube on my dozer every time I grease, which is every day I operate them.

Obviously I use allot of grease, but I also keep a gun in each tractor becuse they each have spots that start to squeek during heavy use, or to tighten one of the tracks.

I think you just may have hit on a solution, all we need to do is just buy more machinery, I knew we had that genetic urge for a reason. Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree Eddie. I don't use as much grease as you, but I do grease my mowers (rc & mmm) every time I use them, and everything else probably two or three times as often as recommended. My Land Cruiser will take a whole tube or more to do. I buy grease by the case.

I made a gun holder that mounts to the ROPs of my Kioti CK30 . It is a piece of 2 1/2 " exhaust pipe tubing with a long legged U bolt welded at the top to attach it to the rops. the tube is longer than the grease gun and I have a rag wadded up in the bottom to absorb the drips. Having the grease gun right at the tractor insures that my backhoe and loader get timely applications of lubricant without having to go to the shop for supplies. I have less than five bucks in this project, and that includes an aerosol can of grey paint to match the ROPS /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

My high-tech solution is to set my grease guns in an old plastic 5 gallon bucket when I'm done using them. I have given up trying to keep them from leaking.

Yep grease guns are just messy , Plan on it. store in a bucket or hang over bucket, etc.... Or you could take your tractor to the dealer and have them greased every few days, or few weeks depending on your use. Think I will just put up with the mess /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
