I was putting the dirt from my dirt pile through a screen and came up with this. Looks like it's been in the ground for quite a while. It's not especially important, but I'm curious if anyone happens to know what it is.

Was your yard ever a hayfield?

My house was built next to the original farm house for the area. I think much of my yard was once where they put the junk, so I've found some unusual stuff coming to the surface over the years. Do you think it's a part from a sickle type mower or something?

Yeah, that's the first thought that came to mind although I have no experience with a sicklbar mower. I've only seen the parts for sale at TSC and it resembles those. Besides that, I love the "what'sit" puzzles. Got more junk? I have a strange metal part my mom got me years ago from an antique shop. She only got it for me since it included "Indianapolis" in the cast-in lettering. I'll have to dig it up and post a photo /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Looks a bit small for a sickle mower part.
Maybe the tongue on an old hasp ?
Maybe polariziner for a muffler bearing ?

It's obviously debris from when the aliens landed. You should have never posted it here for the world to see. The guys in black suits and shades will be visiting you shortly.

Been nice knowing you.

It's a pretty consistant 3/16th inch thickness. No indication of ever having an edge like a plane plade, although for certain shoulder planes, the blades do have wings vaguely near the edge like this little thing.

It looks like it may be a rock guard from some farm implement. Here's a LINK to one at TSC. I'll bet there were a lot of different designs.

A tool for prying leprechorns off your arms
Landing gear off a very small rocket
A blunt steak for killing vampires (or does that have to be wooden?)
A tool for forcing into small openings to see how far it will go in before it gets stuck
A tire lever for levering tires
A cutting blade for blading cuts
A cheese slice for slicing cake (ha, got you there!)
A cheese or cake slice for slicing cheesecake (depends on which bit you slice)
Something to throw at annoying neighbors
A very small boat anchor
