MF 1030 Water in Transmission oil, Drained Refilled, Still no Htd pressure

Solved!

Just have to bleed the pressure side of the pump. Was different from most bleeding I've done in that there were just a few air bubbles, and then just a very slight stream of oil. Tightened the nut and works like a charm!

I got the tip from Winn the owner of NCW tractor, online.

Not solved!

Hydraulic action on front end loader is very jerky and noisy.

Like pump is sucking air, but I find no suction leaks.

Hydraulic fluid is full and clean. Filter is new.

How do you troubleshoot the problem?

Is it jerky and noisy at all engine speeds or just when closer to full throttle?

Jerky & noisy indicates the pump is cavitating or starving for oil. This can be from a leak in the line or a partially plugged inlet screen or filter.

Did you use factory filters or after market? Some people have reported problems using filters other the factory.

jerky at all engine speeds. Used factory filter rated at 18-20gpm. Oil level is full.

Curious if anyone knows if Massey 1030 compact has an inlet screen. Uses tranny as reservoir. Two lines from loader control attach to right side of tranny. The large main suction line comes off the left side of the tranny and is hard piped into the filter housing. That's hard piped into a rubber coupler at the pump. (no leaks there) I see no access plates etc on the side of the tranny which might have given access to a screen.

The loud squealing noise (like air) is coming not from the pump, but from the tranny! You only hear the noise when the FEL lever is pulled. If this is air or cavitation, I would think the pump would be making the noise but it's not!

Are there any ways to trouble shoot this? I'v considered blowing air backwards through the suction line, through the filter, and back into the tranny in case there is a screen in the tranny.

ET,
Not at all familiar with your Massey 1030 but do you have any idea on what the two lines are that connect to the right side of the tranny and FEL control valve? I suspect one is pressure and one is power beyond. Is it possible that the block these line s connect to has a plug that is used to direct oil to the FEL or to the 3PH if no FEL valve is installed. A couple of people have reported the O-rings on this plug has gone bad allowing oil to by-pass so the FEL does not work properly. Not sure if this would cause the noise or not though.

Does the 3PH work correctly?

Have you tried posting in the massey section of this forum?

Don't know if 3pt works or not. Haven't tried in 25 yrs. Think handle might be stuck.

I don't know about power beyond or how that works.

I just assumed that one line at the FEL control is pressure and the other a return. I do know they are labeled in and out.

Those 2 lines have quick connects.

Curious if anyone knows of a way to troubleshoot and figure out if it's the pump, or an air leak, or maybe something in the tranny.

If i get desperate, I might try to bypass the filter assembly and draw some fluid from a bucket, and somehow return pressure to a bucket, seeing if the noise goes away.

Only way that I know to test the pump is with a flow meter and some form of loading valve like a relief valve. This way you can monitor flow vs pressure.

With the pump on the tractor you would have to connect the pressure port of the pump to the flow meter assembly before any other connections to be 100% sure all of the flow was being directed to the flow meter.

Testing flow using the quick disconnect might work. If the noise is still present then you will have to dig deeper to find the problem

Great suggestion on the flow meter.

Thought i would try a "seat of the pants" test first. Just removed the high pressure line from the 9gpm pump, started engine, run oil into bucket for 1 min.

I got a miserable 1 qt. So at this point it seems i have an air leak or a clogged filter from sludge. (assuming the pump is ok)

Some old timers have told me that with 30 or 40 year old tractors kept outside, you might have to refill and drain the oil 4 or 5 times to remove most of the sludge.

Best evidence... Both times i changed the filter, the FEL worked great for a minute or two!

Does this have to be this hard? !!!

Can you remove an access cover to look inside the tranny housing. A couple of people have reported this was the only way they found an inlet screen that was plugged with 40 years of crud. Most tractors the top of the tranny is removable and not to hard of a job unless you have a cab. Then the job is more difficult.

FYI: our old 5000 Ford had a cover on the side of the tranny housing for access to the hydraulic pump and inlet screen.

Success!
Changed oil and filter the 3rd time, including removing the top tranny cover and washing through a few extra gallons there.

Thanks for all who contributed, it was a battle but well worth it!
