I'm new here and could really use some help. I have a MF 1035 with a 1016 FEL with 1250hrs on it, the other day I was attempting to pull a pipe out of the ground and heard a loud pop come from the front LH side. I went to back up and the front left tire was locked up. I brought it in the shop this morning and started to pull it apart. I removed the outer knuckle assy and disconnected the CV joint from the main axle shaft. My question is how do you split the outer knuckle assy? I removed 10 or so bolts and am having a difficult time spliting it to access the gears inside. There is definately a gear broken in there and I need to get it apart. I noticed a nut in the lower portion of the assy that looks to be holding a bearing in place, do I need to loosen this or just drive a screwdriver into the old gasket to split it in half. I ordered a service manual and it won't be here for a few weeks, any help would be much apprecieaed since it is getting into prime time mowing season!!!

Please disregard this question, I was able to split the outer knuckle. I chipped 3 teeth off the large gear and 2 off the small one. Anyone have an idea where I can buy affordable parts?

Well I ordered parts today from the dealer and supprisingly they had them in stock, $350 for the large gear and $225 for the smaller. That is pretty salty but I guess at least I'll be mowing again shortly.

Wow, that is amazing that they had them in stock.
Anyway, I'm glad that you was able to get the parts. Now you can get started on fixing it.

Yeah I was pretty amazed myself. I got them from M. M. Weaver and Son's near Lancaster PA.

I have another question since my service manual hasn't arrived yet, how tight are you supposed to torque the large nut that holds the gear and bearings on?

Welcome to TBN. Sorry to hear of your problems. Were you using the FEL to pull pipe out of ground and trying to back up at the same time? Wonder why gears failed? At least you found the parts for repair. Pics would be nice.

Yes I was pulling the pipe (turns out to be a support post for a telephone line that was coiled into the ground) in reverse using the FEL in low/reduction gear. The pipe was below the tractor on the side of the bank, there was a lot of pressure on the front end and with the new ag tires I have it wouldn't allow the front end to spin. In hindsight it was pretty stupid of me to try it that way but live and learn I guess. I will post pics of the nut I need to torque tonight, it is the one that holds the large 5" gear in place (maybe 1" or 1+1/16 hex)
