Does anyone out there have any exprience with the PTO on a MF-1260? The PTO doesnt work with the dash switch or the manual shifter. The output shaft turns freely even when the shifter is put in gear. Im guessing the rod that slides the fork in and out of gear has come lose or something is disconnected in there somewhere. The switch that operates the solenoid seems to be operating OK as I had it out and it seems OK as well as the solenoid itself. If this is internal its no easy task as the whole diff. cover has to come off. Anyway thats pretty well it in a nut shell. Any advice or hints would be greatly appreciated.

Has it been a long time since you've used the PTO? Sometimes the solenoid valve gets sticky when they don't get used. You can lightly TAP on the valve with the PTO engadged and it will start up.

hmmm. I just read the rest of it, semms to be more than that. The handle isn't loose on the shaft or something silly is it?

Disconnect the shift linkage to the shift arm coming out of the transmission housing. Rotate the shift arm with a pair of vise grips. If the PTO still won't engage, then you confimred your problem is internal and not likage related.

Try this. With the engine running at operating RPM (2500) and the PTO lever NOT engaged, slide the PTO lever into engagement. With my tractor, due to some friction on the none engaged PTO clutches there will be a slight gear grind. However, it may not do this without a load on the PTO. This should tell you if the shift lever is not engaging in the transmission.

the pto shift lever has to be engage and then flip the pto switch.the book says causes could be [pto shift lever in neutral],[defective pto switch],[clogged pto valve],[poor pump],[defective solenoid valve] was this all working and just stop?

All of the above has been checked out, the engine RPM drops slightly when the dash switch is fliped to the on position which means the solanoid is engaging the clutch but thats as far as it goes. When you turn the PTO shaft by hand and engage the manual shift lever would you not feel some resistence as this is turning the internal lock up to the hydraulic clutch.

How many hours are on your tractor? Are you the original owner? Is it possible the clutch pack is just worn out? It sounds like it's trying to engage and maybe the PTO clutches are tired. Has it been working good?

Tractor has 1500 hrs. and Im the 2nd owner. Bought tractor from a tractor dealer but the unit was in such good shape that I just picked it up on the spot. I crawled under and over this tractor and every grease zerk that is on this tractor had been greased. Also this unit does not have an oil leak anywhere, its spotless. The fenders and hood look like a new tractor, not a scratch anywhere. But.........the one thing I didnt check was the PTO, got all caught up with how good it looked. When haying is over I will have to dig a bit deeper and find out more. Thanks Guys, greatly appreciated.
