MF 135 diesel does not restart after choking off

I have a MF 135 Perkins diesel. The engine is rebuilt, and starts and run great. Fires up every time, on the second revolution of the engine.

The only issue is that three times (the third is right now) I have had the engine choke off under load, and then it does not restart. I do not have a problem restarting it when I cut it off myself. The problem has occurred only when it chokes off by itself under load.

The previous two times, the tractor started right up, after having sat for a day.

Ideas? Thanks! I have some work I need to get done!

I don't know much, but when it chokes under load, is it getting too much fuel or too little? Does it smoke before it chokes, or after you get it started up again? What color?

Maybe "choke" is the wrong word. Each time, I had the throttle at idle, at it stopped when I put it into gear with a bushhog hooked up. Simple error, but I don't get the thing about not starting back up. I didn't notice any color of the smoke.

BUT... meanwhile, I just tried some starting fluid, and it started right up. Beats me why it needed it, but that seems to fix the problem. I'll just carry that with me in case it happens again.

Do not use starter fluid, you might kill your engine, it's very bad.

Start with the usual suspects, clean the tank, fuel line, fuel pump and change fuel filter. Also be sure the return line functions.

Sure the venting on the fuel cap works? No vacuum when you takes the cap off?

The curious thing is that the engine starts and runs great every time, if I had used the fuel cut-off control, as usual, to shut down the engine. The problem only occurs if I accidentally bogged down the engine and it stopped that way instead. The best solution is probably just to avoid doing that! Still, I can't help wondering why that would make a difference...

Yes, its very strange.
Was it running very hot when it happend? Did you some heavy work?
A long shot could be that the valves are very out of adjustment.

The engine has not been unusually hot. Two times, it was simply that I had it idling, and engaged the pto with a bushhog that had some cuttings under it, and that load just stopped the engine. The other time, I was doing some bushhog work at low throttle, and it shut off when I tried to chew up a stump that was a little too big at that throttle setting. No big deal, I would think, but...

I'm fine with putting this thread to rest. I thought maybe there was a known quirk. If it happens again, it appears I can restart it after letting it sit for a while, or giving it a squirt of starting fluid in the air intake. Thanks for the remark about not wanting to use starting fluid... I have done it only once, and don't figure on doing that regularly and maybe never again.

If it happens again try to loosen the diesel pipe on the injector and se if it gets diesel, does it regulate the rpm correctly?
