I have a 1973 MF 135 perkins diesel. I have done a lot of work on the hydraulics and did a custom install of a front loader. Have rebuilt many gas engines, plus repairs but, dealing with a diesel engine is a new experience. I use this tractor maybe 1 or 2 times a year. Have noticed that the engine was running a little rough at low RPMs the past few usages. Yesterday, I was finishing up a project when suddenly there was a low level rattling noise, plus some vibration in the engine. Let the tractor rest and checked fluid levels. All was good and the oil was clean, no signs of metal particles. Removed the fan belt to take the water pump and alternator out of the possible causes. Started the engine and still had problem. No black smoke from exhaust. I did add some injector cleaner prior to this usage... I doesn't sound like bad bearings. Hard to identify where the noise is originating from but, i think it is coming from the top of the engine. Engine always starts in a couple of seconds and was supposedly rebuilt prior to my purchase.
Would appreciate any trouble shooting ideas or suggestions on possible problem...... Thanks
