I have the single wire alt on mine, it wont charge til the rpm's are up.

Where is the suction line for the front pump connected to on the tractor?
Have you checked the coupling on the front pump to make sure it is not slipping?
Normally MF's with front mounted pumps and loaders had the reservoir in the loader frame, the front mounted pump that was on my loader would pump 22GPM and that was to fast and had many restrictors in the lines to slow it down, your pump looks to be much larger than the one I had, was there a backhoe mounted on this tractor before?

Out of ideas on the hydraulics -- does sound a bit like a relief pressure issue on the FEL. Still recommend looking up three wire alternator installs on here. Not difficult to do and no excite issues at low RPM. My 135 had the tach driven off the generator so I always maintained the genny.

With regard to where the suction line for the front pump is connected, if connects to the filler plug on the transmission. I haven't checked to see if the
coupling on the front pump is slipping, but I will as soon as I figure out how!

If certainly sound like the single wire alternator is out, I have had a look at the alternators on the Bare Co web site but the only conversion they list is for the TA20, will this fit on a 135?

Once I find out where the relief value is and how to check it, I will let you know the results

Thank you all so much for you helpful and timely info :eek::eek:

G'day Michael you can grab a holden or ford alt with an inbuilt reg and mount up should not cost any more than 20 bucks from a wrecker we have one on a 175 and do not have any charging probs. Do you know how to wire one of these up?

I have never seen the suction side plumbed into the fill hole, how much oil is there in the transmission,is it filled to the top?

The oil in the transmission is now filled up to the mark on the dipstick, I had to add 5 litres to fill it.

I don't know off hand how to wire a 3 wire alternator, any hints?

I haven't come to grips with the Draft Control and the Raise Lower controls, can someone explain it to me in simple language?

The position control is exactly that, the position of the lift arm up and down.

When active the draft control applies a variable amount of lifting force to the arms controlled by two perameters, the position of the lever and the amount of pressure pushing in on the top center link on the back of the tractor. The harder an implement is to pull, the more force is applied pushing in on the center link. The draft setting eases up on the lift arms to lighten the load.

Here's a good excercise to simulate how it works. With the tractor running and no implement behind, lower the lift arms all the way down. Ease up on the draft lever just to the point the arms start to raise and then back off a little so they drop back down. Now stand behind the tractor and push in on the top link hitch point with your hand. By varying the amount you push, you can make the lift arms move up or down. In this case your hand represents the force applied to the top link from the plow, disc, whatever. Push the lever further down, more pressure required to actuate, etc.

make sense?

Sorry to hear about your hydraulic troubles. My 1960 diesel MF 135 is not exactly the same as yours, but my experience may be useful to you. Using the FEL and three points for over 10 years, I had the same trouble you have several times. The cause was always the same : a very small leak in the metal tube bringing the pressure to the ram (only one in my case). When the tractor was sitting idle for a few days, air got in and allowed the oil to flow out of the pump and back to the reservoir. It then took quite a lot of effort to prime it again.
