MF 1433v died and will not start

Hello all! I am currently borrowing my father in laws 1433v while I get some cylinders modified and replaced on my tractor. I was clearing some Russian olives with the front end loader, nothing particularly strenuous, and the tractor just died all of a sudden. No bog down, no loud noises or anything, just died, like someone had cut the key off. I Tried to start it back up and would just crank. It puffs white smoke when trying to start from cold. Black smoke after I have pulled the air cleaner and given it a bit of Ether. Drained the diesel and put fresh in. Added some hot shot extreme to try and clear up any contaminants. Seems like its getting fuel. Any other ideas? Is there a cutoff I could have accidentally tripped while driving over brush? Any other ideas for testing? I will pull the high pressure fuel lines and individually check the flow, but I am pretty new to diesels and am at a loss...

Thank you in advance!

Re: MF 1433v died and will not start

Do NOT use ether on a diesel tractor. Ether will detonate too soon on the compression stroke. You may have water in the fuel. See if the tractor has a water separator in the line somewhere.

See I’ve heard it both ways, “Ether is okay just don’t use the glow plugs” and “Never use Ether, it detonates too soon”. The old timers around here say they use to have ether injectors in their air cleaners and would use it on a cold morning.

I had been running the tractor for about an hour and a half prior to the dying. Would it take that long for the water to find its way in?

If you have a water separator it could have been filling with water over time until it reached the full point and nothing else could pass. Another possibility I keep reading about but have no experience with is algae in the tank, lines, or filter. You could try pulling a line at the output of your filter and see if you have any fuel flow. After that you would probably have to bleed the air from your lines but that would also serve to show whether you have fuel flow through the system.

So I’m not sure if I do or not. There is a clear bowl that the tank flows into, that has filter in it and a drain line that I have drained most of the tank through. I have read a lot that many of the masseys have 2 fuel filters, one serving as a fuel filter and one serving as a water separator. In my experience with smaller gas engines, what I have described is more closely associated with a fuel filter, but could that be the water fuel separator and then later on in the line there would be a fuel filter? Maybe up near the engine itself?

Man I would kill for a repair manual like I have more for JD650...

I don't think you'd have to kill to get a manual but you may have to pay money and order one. Some companies at least have parts breakdowns on line for their tractors. A parts manual should allow you to trace out the fuel system and see of what it consists.

I say look at the safeties. IE seat etc. Wire somewhere could have come loose or maybe shorted
I had seat switch failure on mine did that

I agree with this; sounds like a safety wire broke or came unplugged. Check the ine around the seat.

I amended my post. I had a seat switch failure do that exact thing on me

Hmmmm Would a bad/disconnected/broke safety relay allow the tractor to still crank but not full fire?

Roadworthy, I know, but it takes time to purchase and get those items shipped. I have set a timeline in my head for this project and this is an unfortunate time suck. Good idea on tracing out the fuel system from a parts diagram though.
