They are the same. I have used both. It is the internal specifications that are the most different.

Thanks for that, looks to be my next filter then.

So would there be an advantage to using a 1540 oil filter on a 1533?

Going bigger, means more filtering.

Hi,
I'm using purolator pure PL10241 on a 1540mf.
You can find it on sale for $5 at advance auto etc.. Very good filter.
bypass kicks in at a lower psi than painted mf filter
If you think an aftermarket filter is risky, by all means ignore this post.
I hope I've helped some people.

I'll stick with the Pure One PL10241 for now. It's 12-15 psi bypass is closer to the original spec than the 8-11 for the Napa, and from tests I seen- be it legit or not, the Pure One seems to impress. If they stop making the P1 I'll probably try the Napa.

I used Purolators for years, and had the L10241 (not PL) several times on one of my cars. And noticed the filter seemed to have little if any anti-drainback capability. The engine would dry start. I've switched it to the NAPA Gold / Wix filter referenced earlier in the thread, and that cured my problem. I would have tried the PL again but the grit they paste onto the filter housing makes for a very tight fit on the filter wrench, and I had trouble getting it to let go.

When I switched to NAPA Gold, I just unscrewed the Purolator and switched it knowing there would be little to no oil in it. And that was true.

Since then all my cars and my tractor get NAPA Gold.

Changed to an oversized P1 filter today. Cut open the PL10241 @ 105 hours, and it looked good.
It occurred to me that there is room in there for a larger filter, so for the same $, why not? More media, less restriction.
OP light went out instantly. I'm happy.
