Im working on fixing a 70's vintage MF 245 diesel with the perkins 3.152 3 cylinder engine for my boss.

initially it started with a fuel filter change hoping to clear up a miss and lack of power. Monday was spent mowing with a brush hog for 4-5 hours (miss still present) until the tractor started losing power and rpms. it bounced back a couple times before dying on me. I was unable to get it restarted. I was able to get it started yesterday after actuating the primer on the transfer pump for a while. Even though it started, it is running worse than previous, like it is down a cylinder or 2. there is no smoke, white or black, which leads me to believe that it is a fuelling issue.

What i can't determine is whether it is the transfer pump or the injection pump/injectors. I do suspect the initial miss is due to a bad injector on the front cylinder. Is there any way to tell what might be causing this issue? i have a transfer pump on order already that should arrive monday, but if that doesn't work, i really don't want to tell my boss he has to drop $1000 in parts unless im POSITIVE it is what is needed.

Any advice would be most appreciated!

If you can get it running you should be able to feel the difference on what cylinder are firing. I have not done so before but have heard you can feel next to the injector base and see which cylinder is not firing.

The initial description (Motor fading in and out...loosing power) sounds VERY much like a transfer pump diaphram failing. That'll allow air in the system. The PErkins AD3-152 burns fuel so sparingly, it takes FOREVER to clear air out of the fuel system by any other means besides bleeding. And then with a bad diaphram, you're still getting air IN.

I'd start by rebuilding the transfer pump. Kits aren't at all expensive, and a decent MF/AGCO dealer will have them on the shelf. Even a new pump isn't too pricey.

THEN bleed the main pump (Both lower AND upper bleed screws) and FINALLY bleed injectors (and lines).

It's a PERFECT time to change filters and clean screens BEFORE fighting this battle also.

Hi, I have a 275 and have fuel coming out the bleed screws on the injector pump but nothing coming out the injector lines to the cylineder. Can you help?
