I recentlly bought a MF 35 with a mF loader on an on line auction It looks like the po started to restore before developing alzheiimers. It has a new rear rim along with new rear tires but you cantell tell that had sat for quite a while be fore he started on it. Some one had removed the oil filter and canister I removed the oil pan drain plug about a tablespoon of clear water came out with a lot of carbon black sludge. The oil that came out looked like 50 wt sae. I remove the spark plugs and they were dry but coated with carbon like the engine was running rich. The little hole where the oil filter goes had mud packed in it from the bees and cleaned it out as well as i could wtih Qtips. Can some one post picture of oil passages with the direction of flow? I plan on buying the kit to covert it to a spin on filter but would like make sure the oil pump is ok and the oil passages are clear. The tractor has power steering but no tach and the serial no. plate is missing. The oil filler cap has a what looks some sort of piston to seal off tube about 2" from the top. What is the reason for this?

Hi, it's a good model and sounds like it's worth saving. Having some trouble understanding what you're describing ... can you try to post some pics of the relevant areas? That usually helps - it might take a day or two for answers to appear - there's a huge amount of experience here on this site, but there's also a lot of other jobs keeping us busy as well!

My assumption about the ‘plunger’ on the oil cap is that it’s just course thread and the plunger acts like a gasket to prevent blow by from escaping through the oil fill. My MF35 has the same cap.

As for oil flow, the MF35 has kind of a crappy filtering system. It’ll pick up oil from the pan, filter it, and drop it back into the pan. There are a few users here (Kenneth comes to mind) that have converted it to a proper system.

To answer your question, generally, oil will return to the motor through the center of the filter. That means that the oil will come out of the top hole in your pic, and return through the center hole (with your bolt) in your pic. Hope that helps!

You’re welcome! If/when you get a chance, post some pictures in the Massey pictures thread! We all love pics of old Massey Fergusons!
