The Kid: Thanks for the info and I did what you recommended and yes i was able to push the rod and the gear shifter came out of reverse and I could set it where I wanted.

I was finally able to run the mower flaailer at low (creeper speed) because the gras was not only tall but very thick atand at times had to do half cut.

I noticed the temp gauge rose to about 200 F. that was only half way on the range on the scale. What is the normal running temp and at what is considered too hi? After I shut down and let it cool down enough to open the radiator cap , there was adequate coolant present. When does it start to steam?

Thanks Again

Mid-gauge on a factory Temp gauge sounds fine - I'll leave it to somebody who knows what the factory thermostat should be to comment on 200F.

An old tractor mechanic commented to me "2 things often don't get changed on tractors - Antifreeze and Hydraulic fluid". At the very least, I'd check the boiling/freeze point of the anti-freeze with a basic coolant tester (I've found that the Prestone branded basic testers fall apart less quickly than the chinese cheapo ones). Unless you know it's been done recently, I'd just replace the anti-freeze with new, but you need to at least check the freezing point of the anti-freeze before Winter. :2cents:

Check the boots on your shifters and seals on the hydraulic fill/check ports - if they've deteriorated, that could be where the water is getting into the Hyd fluid. Empty 5 gal bucket inverted over the shifter can provide a bit of temporary rain protection.

You can drop by Harbour Freight and buy one of those cheap laser thermometers and aim it at the radiator cavities and the output tube on the water pump and get a good questimation of what the water temp in running. As mentioned it's always a good idea to changout the antifreeze this time of year. At sea level water boils at 180 degrees. Add a 50/50 mix of antifreeze raises that boiling point quite a bit. Your temp sounds about right. Just remember less air moving thru the radiator due to high grass will raise your water temp a bit. Where you able to lower your mower?

Yes, the mower raises and lowers as I request it to. Everything worked well except I saw the temp hovering about half way on the gauge but at about 200-220 F. The grass is about 10 to 12 tall but very thick because of the excessive rain. Some areas of very sandy soil are grass covered for the first time in years because of the moisture.
