Welcome to TBN.

I believe you are overthinking this. Get a good measurement for length and go shopping. I'd start with a soft spring and work my way up.

What exactly does this spring do?

its a the balance spring on bottom of throttle shaft it attaches to a curved arm on one end and the balance bracket on the other, I guess must keep tension on the throttle handle

Does the throttle work without spring now?

you need to hold it down to increase rpm, if you take your hand off it goes back to idle

Best I can tell from your pic, parts 4 and 7 combine to hold the throttle in place. 4 are fiber discs that work like brake pads or clutch discs. 7 applies pressure and is adjustable using the bolts that hold the stack together. I think if you tighten the bolts and pressurize the stack, the throttle will staywhere you leave it.

The spring might hold tension on the carb linkage assembly. But don't think it has anything to do with position control of the lever.

ok got a couple of carb springs from o'rielly's will see if they work. Also bought some cork from walmarts for new friction disks if needed. Thanks for the explanation

Added the spring and now it actually will idle were it is suppose to and I can set the rpm with the handle pretty well now.

seems like I have to pull up on the throttle handle to get to work but it seems to stay. Must be an clamp or screw to tighten around throttle shaft to remain in pulled up position.

Yes put a new tach cable on and tach came to life but sometimes it acts like there is no cable on. Maybe I don't have enough lube on ends or maybe i tightened up too much?

I don't think it's too tight. Should have been a square drive cable inside the sheath. It aligns with square receivers on each end. Pretty hard to assemble this wrong. May be that the gauge is sticking. Use it awhile and see if it improves. Next step would be to disassemble the gauge and clean it. Very delicate. Easy to ruin to the gauge.

ok maybe put some lube on it?

I don't think that would help.

Unhook the cable at the engine end. Chuck a drill onto the cable end. Gently turn it while watching the gauge. Confirm you are turning it the right direction. Slowly increase speed watching gauge. Stop start. Stop start. Change speed. Stop start. See if it ever fails. If it does, now you know the problem is at the gauge end. If you can't make it fail, now you know the problem is at the drive end.

Put a little moly lube on the end and it worked good all day. Funny it takes a while to get going, seems to be working fine now

Awesome. Glad it worked out.
