MF1235 won\'t start--safety switch on rear PTO?

While doing some brush hogging yesterday, either a lynch pin on the lift arm of the 3 pt broke or backed out somehow. When the back of the lift arm came up because of the weight of the mower it sheared 2 wires off a large bolt/nut that is mounted into the side of the PTO. Now the tractor won't start (won't even turn over) as though I'm trying to start it with it in gear. I'm assuming that those wires are to a safety of some sort that prevents you from starting the tractor with the rear PTO engaged. That nut appears to have 2 green and 2 red wires soldered to it (1 green and 1 red is what sheared off). Is that all it is? Just soldered on or is there something more to it?

Would love to hear anyones input!

thx,
clattin

Clattin,
Im no familiar with that tractor, but I would bet you have solved the problem already! Solder those wires back up and I think you should be good to go.

You will be alright soldering them. To get it started and get it out of the field. Just strip some of the wire and twist them together. Then you can start it.

Re: MF1235 won\'t start--safety switch on rear PTO?

Those wires do go to the PTO safety switch. Tha tractor has 3 nuetral start switches (seat, range gear and PTO - 4 if you have mid PTO) and a safety relay. THe safety relay senses that the operator is in the seat when the tractor is in gear or the PTO is on and allows the tractor to run. If the operator gets off the seat and the range lever is in gear or PTO on, it will kill the engine and/or prevent the engine from being started.

Well.....I'm stumped. I soldered the wires back on to the contacts and....nothing. So, I cut both red wires and both green wires off the switch and jumped them together; both red-green, red-green and red-red, green-green.....and still it won't turn over.

It's in neutral, both PTO's are off and the previous owner had disabled the seat safety so I know that's not the issue.

I just don't get it, it didn't quit running; it just won't start again.

Thx again for your help!

Have you checked the fuses. When you tore them off, you might have blown a fuse.

HOLY COW!! I knew it was going to be something simple like that. THANK YOU, JERRY! I can't believe I didn't think of that earlier. It was the safety relay fuse.

Man, I've been racking my brain trying figure out what was going on and why I couldn't think of it. It's always those simple things isn't it?

Thanks again everyone! I'm really glad this forum is here! I'm sure it saved me a lot of money rather than trying to get my tractor loaded up and taken to my dealer to find out it was a 50 cent fuse!

Thanks again,
Chris
