I've got a '67 MF135 Delux with the Cont. Z145...has 12V generator...does the ammeter ever go over to the "white" or charge side??/ Mine drops back into the red when you start it (when the starter motor engages), then once it starts, the needle goes back to the center only...I've never seen it go to the right at all...is this normall??? With engine about 1500RPM use a jumper wire to ground Field terminal on generator, should move to plus side. If so regulator is not working, may just need points inside cleaned under cover after removing bat ground cable first. If still no charge generator is not working, may need cleaned and brushes freed up if stuck in holders, or may have bad armature. May also need gen polarised by using jumper at bat positive to touch to gen armature terminal. Another quick gen check, remove belt from pulley, use jumper wire as in polarising, a good gen will turn like a motor, not fast but turn on its own. Let us know what you find.

Another quick way is to put a multimeter on the battery positive and negative on volts and see if the voltage goes above 13 volts with the engine running at 1/2 speed and no lights on. It should ideally get up to 14 volts with it dropping down to 12.8 or so on tickover
the ammeter is misleading as it only shows the flow of power in and out of the battery, not the dynamo output so if the lights are on an the dynamo is not able to keep up, then the excess coming out the battery will be shown as negative whereas if the battery is low on charge, then the flow will goe the other way and be shown as positive charge. the Dynamo could be at max output with the lights on producing exactly what is required and the battery fully charged and the ammeter will show zero
Normally, the ammeter will show a psoitive reading after starting at medium revs and then drop back to zero as the battery reaches fully charged state
Hope this helps

Already did the multimeter on the battery...was only making 12.3ish volts when it was running...as said, should have been 13.5-14 volts when running...today just solidified that I needed a re-build on the gen...BobG in VA

BZZZZZ! Wrong again...took the generator to an auto electric shop...he put it on the bench, and said it was putting out fine...I'm having it "cleaned up" while its there....next I guess I'll move onto the voltage Reg...any other ideas??/BobG in VA

put her back on the tractor and clean all terminals you can think of, positive and negative.

Did you try grounding generator field terminal as mentioned in earlier post?
