MF135 Starter won't engage

My 135 would not start. I pulled the starter and the casting that holds the gear was broken completely off. I bought a new starter with solenoid and installed. The battery was bad so I hooked it up straight to my jump box. I got the solenoid to click but not the motor to engage. I pulled the starter back out and bench tested it and it all worked as it should. Pushed started the tractor and she runs good, just can't get the starter to engage. Going to get a new battery, but shouldn't a battery pump box with a 12V start option work for this? I have used this on other engines with no issue. Any ideas?

Is that a new ... or another ... starter? Is it the correct one? Diesel or gasoline engine? Any chance of a pic of what broke?
The starter on our diesel 135 slips the drive clutch for the first 6-8 tries, then it will crank and start. It's done that for 20 years though! :laughing:
