I just got a notification about posts on this thread, I apologize for not coming back sooner... I found that using a sling and a cherry picker (engine hoist) was pretty good and by going on the outer portions of the 2 fender mounting brackets was a great balance point. I was worried about flipping the axle and breaking the housing, but by using a 2 point sling, things worked out well.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but if your tractor is working well as is then I'm sure it'll be fine. What I've found is since these machines are pretty low speed that things don't have to be as "perfect" as they would be in a car...
