You mention it was "flooded". Was it running while driven into deep standing water?

That could also do it. The cracks are adjacent to the coolant passages, but could also align with the intake valves.

No, it wasn't running when flooded, it was parked and overtaken when the backyard/field went under. But, as Fawken suggests, some dummy may have put water in it while using it.

Do you have the name of the "dummy" so you can track him down and kick some tail? ;) Just kidding. I've seen where a flooded engine that sits for a spell builds up corrosion on the head gasket and loses water while running. Then sometimes people turn the engine off and fill the radiator and start it back up. Not good. Never open a radiator hot, but if you do use a wet rag on the cap and leave engine running. Add water really slowly with engine running.
