This might not help you much, but it could have been much worse. I helped a neighbor replace the headliner and some wiring in about a 200hp big New Holland tractor with a cab. While they like chewing/nesting behind the dash.... they REALLY LIKE setting up house up inside the headliner. Was really a mess.

This reminds me to go check on my boat and put out some poison. It was a **** raccoon that tore into one of my leather seats last year though, no mice. I store my boat in an old warehouse and it's not exactly animal proof unfortunately. All the more reason to get my place built so I can store my stuff.

I've heard putting a bar of Irish spring soap can keep mice out of your engines and wiring. that said i'd have to say the best option is a cat cause i had one help me clean up a rental house about 40 years ago and I swear he ate maybe 20 mice that weekend. after I cleaned up the house the ferral cat that helped me was rewarded cause I always left cat food for the tenants to feed him if he asked.

I have family that uses Irish Spring soap in and around their camper to deter critter invasions also. They used to have mice issues but that seems to have worked well for them.

I must have a different breed of mice by me. I've tried the Irish Spring soap also but the mice by me just eat the stuff.

Mice always wanted to make a nest behind the gauges of the tc33d tractor. I cleaned the area of debris and scrubbed it with a Lysol solution. I then zip-tied a Fresh Cab rodent repellent pouch to the wires in the area. I never had another nest. I never had any of the wires chewed either. I have read that the insulation of some wires are made from soybeans so critters are more prone to chew on them.

Do the cats leave anything BEHIND and do they mark their territory with anything scented? :yuck:

For the past 3 years I have been trapping mice all year long. There numbers have drastically went down, same with the tick population.

I've tried the fresh cab repellent also, with no luck.
As for cats, they will mark their "territory" but cats that are "fixed" generally tend to do that much less.

We've had the wiring of three vehicles and a tractor damaged by mice. Two had underhood fires that may have been caused by electrical shorts. I've been hesitant to use poison out of fear of my dogs getting into it or eating a poisoned rodent so I began using botanical rodent repellent pouches tucked into the engine compartments. So far so good.
