Hey, SHF ... since you've been around Michigan a whole lot longer than I have, I thought I'd ask a question about Michigan etiquette before Miss Manners disciplines me. This is also kind of along the trespass thread that's been getting lots of "heat".
Is there some kind of Michigan welcome for newcomers along the lines of peppering their pasture with golfballs? One of my newer neighbors (neighbor on the corner gave each of his sons a lot and helped them build houses which back onto my pasture) has been using my pasture for a driving range for several years ... and before I take my clubs out there and start driving them back (he has NICE big windows) ... I wanted to make sure this was the proper etiquette.

Pick 'em up and sell 'em back to the guy. If he's been driving 'em for a few years you might find enough to make a payment or two. :)

I don’t know if this is a new pastime in Michigan? /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
I took a tour around the property on my Kubota yesterday. Found a dozen or more golf balls in back field. My property borders 4 homes. I found golf balls all along the field.
Maybe all my neighbors are getting cabin fever from this crazy weather we’ve had in Michigan this year. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif
I picked up all the balls and put them in a bucket.
I don’t golf. So I plan on giving them to a neighbor that borders the offenders property and let him drive them back. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

You may want to try loading them in a manure spreader and "spreading" back.

Spring time is hitting here in Michigan, I'm seeing the first sure signs of spring..."Right Lane Closed Ahead" and "Fines Doubled in Construction Zone". Not to mention the state tree, the Orange Construction Barrel, in full bloom.

Golf balls are expensive. It's a wonder that people can afford to blast them out into the fields but I have found them in the field behind the houses too. More dollars than sense./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I read an article about a guy who makes a really good living fishing them out of the ponds at the local golf courses.

Kids might be shooting them out of their potato cannons.

Most folks with any brains just go down to the beach and drive em into the water. Gives the little kids something to dive for. This is brain dead ettiquette you're dealing with. Gosh, it might be terrible if one of those golf balls got kicked up by the mower and slung back across the property line.

It wouldn't bother me so much except that I don't need the golfballs (they're all from a driving range from the markings) - haven't managed to find the time for a game in 4 years ... and I had at least 36 new balls when I moved here .... and I am concerned he's going to hit one of the horses one of these days.
I didn't want to make a bad situation worse by dropping them off and giving him a friendly right cross .. which was my first impulse ... but I'm getting awfully tempted to start driving them back his way ...
I wonder if there's a neighbor exchange program ... hmmm ... hafta check Google ...

If there is one thing we have seen here is is how much better it is to be on good terms with your neighbors. I know the feeling of wanting to go for a gun. We got to fight it off. Smile and wave and buy girl scout cookies from their kids. I guess you'll have to break down and ask nicely. And then if that doesn't work go for a gun./w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Maybe he thinks you'll think they're puff balls and not notice. Probably you just need to invite him to a barbeque and have a friendly chat. Or, with a little ingenuity and some wire, you could turn those golf balls into something creative. Maybe something that would light up at night and could be placed where the neighbors would have to see it. Or, you could print up some nice little notices offering free golf lessons and post them all over town. (They should have your neighbor's phone number on them, of course). /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I'm just brainstorming here.
