Mid PTO Cover

I just got a TC25D with a 60" MMM and FEL (10 hours on it so far). I took the MMM off yesterday and noticed the mid PTO shaft is left exposed. I know the JD 4110 comes with a cover for the mid PTO shaft. I did a search and found a thread about a cover for the mid PTO shaft. The tractor did not come with a mid PTO cover and my dealer said it does not come with a cover. Should the tractor have come with a cover for the mid PTO shaft? Is there any problems using with tractor without a cover on the mid PTO?

My Kubota B2410 did not come with a mid PTO cover, only a rear cover. I can't see how having it exposed would damage it. I can see how easy it would be to lose the cover!!

The cap you are looking for is actually just a plastic sleeve. The part number is sba398115500 the list price is $2.33 if your dealer can not help you out let me know I will get one for you.

My answer: NO if the mid-PTO shaft doesn't ever turn. YES if it does.

Here is the problem scenario that I had with my Kubota B2150.

If...

(1) You use rear-PTO driven equipment in tall grass (such as a rotary mower), and
(2) The mid-PTO turns with the rear PTO,

then...

the tall grass can wrap around the mid-PTO causing (1) increasing friction until the grass catches on fire, possibly setting a field on fire, and (2) damage to the mid-PTO's seal causing hydraulic fluid leakage.

Most (all?) of the newer Kubotas have independent control of the mid and rear PTOs which can alleviate this problem. I don't know anything about your NH tractor design.

The NH TC25D has independent mid and rear pto levers so it should not be a problem. I will call my dealer and see if I cannot get the cover. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Would the part number be the same for a TC18? I'd like one to keep it clean. Not sure if I've already got one (I'll have to look tonight).

Yes same part on all new holland compacts, but like I said its not much just a plastic sleeve.

I checked last night. I do have one. It is a flexible plastic cap. It presses onto the shaft & rotates with it vs. the one on the rear that doesn't move. Not much of a safety issue as the PTO's are independent & the thing is buried under the tractor. Just the ticket to keep the splines clean when the MMM isn't in use.

My TC29D is the same.

Computerby - It's a shame that your dealer didn't give you the cap to start with, it was part of the tractor and they took it off to install the mower. They should have just put it in your tool box. I would tell them this demand one for free! If it's more than a few miles drive, I would also demand they ship it to you unless you have another reason to drive to the town they're in.

I had a similar situation when I had remote rear hydraulics installed. They did a good job on the installation. When I got there I asked for the installation manual that came with the kit in case I ever need to work on it, plus it had the parts list in it. They had thrown it in the trash! I made them dig it out and give it to me.
