Follow up: I heard from the dealer who talked to "their" JD factory rep. The rep said the mid-pto option for the 4000s has alway been only 2 position options - rear only or both (un-like the 3000s which has 3 pto positions). the reason is because a mid pto on 4000s is not popular and is a cost issue to have three options.
The factory rep. agreed 100% that the MY2011 4720 Owner's Manual "is incorrect", and he was going to put in a request to have it updated...but it might take awhile.
If JD wants us owners to rely on our manuals for safty and correct maint (to support long-life equipment), they should do a much better job. this is not the only time i've had issues with their manuals. one example was on my 3720, the manual instructed me to grease zerks on the front 4wd, when in actuality the front axle was sealed...that was a fun zerk hunt!
Can't JD develop a full-time department to keep manuals current? If I were CEO of JD, no tractor would be launched without an accurate manual...on matter what.
