I've got a '94 JD 1070 with a mid PTO. I've owned it for two years and since I bought it the mid pto will not engage. It just grinds when I try to move the engaging lever. Any advice on what to do to get it unstuck? I'm not about to attempt any in depth mechanical work on it and I really don't need the mid pto feature, but I would like to get it freed up.
Thanks for any advice.

Is it a model that you have to engage the mid PTO before engaging the main PTO ?

On my 4300 there is a clutch that engages the main PTO.. the mid PTO is just a gear to engage on the main PTO drive train.
Just wondering how yours is set up.

On my 3320 you select which PTO you want to engage with a lever and then turn on a electric switch to engage. If there is a selection lever make sure it is fully engaged to the correct position

UPDATE:

I don't know if this is good news for me, or not. I used my tractor today to clean up the ice and snow, and was thinking about the relpies I got to my post, so I thought I'd try it again. First I tried engaging the mid PTO with tranny in nuetral, clutch in an me in the seat. The lever went into the engaged position WITHOUT GRINDING!!! WOW. But now the rear PTO wouldn't go into the engaged position. It moved almost to the engaged position and then the grinding started. That's the opposite of what it did before. What the h__? And even though the mid PTO went to the engaged position, it wasn't engaged (turning).
Something I hadnt mentioned before is that when I bought the tractor the bracket under the seat that you prop up to allow you to operate the rear PTO without being on the seat, was all bent up. That bracket holds down a contact switch when you're in the seat. The switch needs to be compressed for starting and running. I took the bracket out and modified the switch position to work without it. I'm now wondering if that switch is partially bad. It doesn't look unusual, but it and the associated wiring are in the loop for operating both PTO's. (I wonder if I'm not correct on the switch function? Thinking out loud here.)
I think a good session with my volt/ohm meter is next. But I think it's probably good news that the problem may not be with the clutches or something mechanical.
Thanks for the help.

The seat switch will not affect the grinding problem. It's only purpose is to shut off the engine if pto is engaged without someone in the seat. My guess is a linkage problem. There is a rather complex linkage arrangement that operates the mid pto and if something gets out of adjustment or gets bent or lost, it can cause grinding. Be sure to see if item #22, 23, and 25 is there. I have seen these come off for some reason.

jd110,
Thank you for the help, but I'm working on a Kindle and haven't figured out how, or if I even can, open thumbnails.
