I am curious as to what these two attchments are used for. What kind of soil can they be used in

I have a middle buster (aka, potato plow) and I use it to make the furrows for planting my garden. I've used it to cut ditches too.
Yep, you can uncover your taters with one too.

In my mind, I ambitiously call my middlebuster a plow. It's also a plow when non-tractor folk ask what it does. Technically, of course, the similarities it shares with a real plow blade are offset by the differences. But, to me it's still a plow. At least that's the way I use it. I run it as deep as it will go, to turn the garden soil in preparation for planting in Spring. Sort of a poor man's tiller. I smooth the dirt back out with boxblade or loader bucket before planting. Then, again in the Fall it's used to turn under whatever is left on the surface. It works great. Other uses as described by Bo, above.

After following threads here on TBN I feel pretty comfortable about knowing what a subsoiler can do. I've never used one, so I won't bore you with my thoughts. But, I would like to have one. There're plenty of TBNers who can give you first-hand feedback. Also, you might try running a search.

Greenthumb, I suppose you can use a MB/SS in any soil. I've used one for short, shallow trenches. For deeper, longer trenches I prefer a ditch witch. My primary use is breaking up compacted ground in the first and maybe second year until the ground gets worked. The tiller does a better job with the broken soil on top and I get better drainage below the tilling. Be careful not to bury your good top soil--this can ruin years of getting your soil in shape. The MB can double as a plow too. You can attach different shapes and kinds of furrowing shovels, flyers. I've seen more shapes and sizes than I know. Best of luck.

A Middlebuster is also called a Potato plow. It's design is to throw the soil to both sides of the plow. It is used to make furrows for planting potatoes and other crops. It is also used for harvesting potatoes.

A Subsoiler is used to break up hard packed or compacted soil. It has a narrow chisel tooth which enables it to rip through the soil and break up clay and compacted soil.

Both have been used/adapted for other uses. Use you imagination.... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
