Just got Midway's flier and Larry is plastered all over it. In retrospect he looks a bit like Jimmy Carter........
Midway is great for parts, so so for projectiles and Cabelas like for optics.
It's (the firearm business) has become very competitive. It's hard to appease American citizens hunger for weaponry but again, it's very competitive.
I use Cabelas for a sounding board, that is, I can visit there and do a hands on with oprics or firearms and then go buy them elsewhere...for much less.
Also got a Cabelas flier today showing 'limited to instock clearance items' interestingly priced at actual retail instead of inflated Cabelas prices.
I was talking to the day manager at the local store before Christmas. He told me that their in store sales volume was down 50% fro the same time last year, they hired no Christmas help and I would agree with that. Our club sold christmas trees in the parking lot, in collaboration with Cabelas and at no time did I see the parking lot full, in fact, the store was, at times, pretty empty.
There are some great deals but you have to go there with a specific item in mind. I gor the Bushnell Pro ARC 1000 range finder with ballistic tables built in, plus a pair of roof prism bino's plus a game kit that actually had sharp knives... for 265 bucks plus triple points. The Bushy 1000 ARC is advertised on the net everywhere for $260.00. But again, that was an unadvertised special and limited quantities.
On limited stock, Cabelas is good for one or two in stock. That sucks too.
Typical markup on non-firearm items is 100% plus. Clothing is 200% plus.
I'm lucky in that I have a personal friend who owns a gun shop and has a BATF retail license so I buy my firearms at the lawful 10% over manufacturers cost. That will never happen at Cabelas. You pay for the ambience. I care less about the surroundings. When I want a gun, I know exactly what I want.
