I have it on good authority that the new Midwest Quick Hitch production will begin VERY soon. Patenting with the Gov takes soooo long. It may be available as early as Feb-Mar.

Jim has listened to us here........and it seems the hitch will be built to Cat 1 standards and powder coated.....there may be a hydraulic option in the future.
I think they will have colors to match 4 brands and maybe 5.

I have to admit to being as dummy here. I am not real knowledgeable in the world of quick hitchs other than knowing what one is and what it does.
How does the New Midwest hitch differ from other designs ?

Re: Midwest Quick Hich

Mark,
They want to make them to Cat 1 standards which most others don't. The design allows good access to PTO shafts. The prototype I saw, locked on the pins opposite than the major brands. Looked like it woud work much better to me. And there may be a hydraulic locking option in the future for those with remotes to use.

If I read you right, the manufacturer's shipments are delayed due to the patent process. The patenting process shouldn't cause a shipping delay. Once the patent is applied for, the manufacturer should be free to advertise, show, sell etc. without endangering the patent process. I suppose the situation could be that a competitor has a patent for something similar and the manufacturer is making sure his is different enough to avoid patent infringement prior to shipping?

Re: Midwest Quick Hich

Jerry,
Thanks for the explanation. I have often looked at the quick hitchs and wondered about getting one, but then I only have the two 3 point attachments ( rake & weight box ) the backhoe is subframe mounted. So maybe down the road after I acquire more attachments.

Re: Midwest Quick Hich

We had other entities asking for design features not incorporated in the original design from last summer, which put us back almost to square one. The new design, while retaining the look and PTO access of the original has a few other changes in the locking mechanism. We also had to test with a top and tilt system and provide and upgrade path for those wanting to lock up the latches with hydraulics.

I small bit I've learned on patents. I wish it were as simple as those late night patent ripoff ads seem to say it is. But essentially, if you don't do all the work in the right order, you may end up with the greatest design, tooling, and manufacturing processes on earth and never be able to manufacture it. That equals money down the drain.

Just because a patent is applied for doesn't mean you will get it, or that some obscure reference won't be infringed upon. Even with a patent issued, you have no absolute guarantees your idea is original and not previously covered under another issued patent. Patent searches are not 100% foolproof and certainly not guaranteed. Most are simply an attorney's opinion that you are in the clear. Someone else's attorney may see it differently and convince his client there is money to be made.

Moral of the story, get it right before you go to market or you may get to pay to do it all again. The worst part is, if some big corp wants to rip you off, they have the attorneys already being paid for to defend and delay so it really costs them very little. On the other hand the little guy pays from the first word until it's over. You pay your money and you take your chances.

Re: Midwest Quick Hich

Right on the money Jim.
The patent process needs to be worked out fully in the beginning. And it takes forever. Sounds like Midwest is doing just as I suspected.... the right steps from the beginning.
BTW, I have no interest financially or otherwise in Midwest. I just like their equipment and the way that they want to build things the way implement users want. When I met Jim, he asked what I thought of the equipment I saw, and wanted ideas on how to make things better. Or even new ideas.

Re: Midwest Quick Hich

Redding........the shipping hasn't been delayed, but the manufacturing. If you don't have the patent in hand, why build something someone else could copy? With the patent, Midwest can make them right away, the R&D has been all done.

I don't suppose you have any pics of the new design and approx retail cost?

Re: Midwest Quick Hich

Whenever I have discussed ideas with someone interested in filing for a patent, I always am asked to sign a confidentiality agreement, that I won't disclose anything about what we discussed. They need to be concerned about disclosing the patent information too soon. Has that been your experience?
