Mig feed rate too high ? How do I know ?

I've used 3 different brands of wire in my Lincoln mig. Each feed differently. I set the roller tension just barely tight enough to feed, but so that it will slip if I put enough resistance against the wire. Feed rate is a "feel" thing. Or sould I say a "sound" thing. Feed so that the arc sounds constant and steady, with ZERO "pulsing". That's generally too fast feeding from my limited experience.

Welding is all about practice.

This probably happens when you have the gun at an accute angle which binds the liner and wire causing the wire to slip then the rollers flatten the wire when it starts slipping.

I have it happen to me fairly regularly on my Miller, I just give the wire a little tug with pliers and cut to length (1/2") then hit it again.

You proper wire tension is spelled out in your owners manual with the wire being able to curl on a block of wood.

In the 4 years I had my MM175 I never had this or any problem with wire feeding. I ran the cheapest wire I could buy, usually Harbor Freight .030 solid core. I probably went thru 15 or more 10 lb spools of .030 and .023.

I am obviously doin somethin wrong cause you and I have the same machine. It will do it with the gun bent sharply, not all the time just every now an again or when I let the tip get to close to the puddle and stick the wire to the tip /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Thanks to all for the feedback and suggestions. I also talked to a pro welder who said that if I ever stepped on or otherwise kinked the cable, the liner may have a permanent kink that can only be fixed by replaceing the liner. I did'nt even know it had a liner /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
