Depending on how it's wired, if the alternator is putting out at all it could go wide open providing sixteen volts to the battery. You'd be better served just trying to run it without the battery. If you don't have any computer stuff the battery is only used to start and power the indicators and lights anyhow. You will need to put the battery on a charger from time to time running without the alternator.
an alternator with wye windings could put out 130 Volts!. not good at all for a battery or the rest of the tractor!.:eek: a high output alternator such as a leece neville uses delta connected windings which can put out 60 volts+. you'd burn out everything connected to it!. the leece neville and some others use avalanche diodes which break down and short out at 30 Volts, but even that can cause damage to electrical systems. What are avalanche diodes in an alternator? How do they function? - Quora
