Got these things bad this year. All over the garage floors and concrete porch.

I have never noticed them in years past. There are literally hundreds of them.

Not sure what they are, or if they pose a danger to me or my building. Any info you all may have would be great.

Heres some pics. Best I could do. And they are small. Maybe 1" long, 1-1/4" long at most.

From what I can read, they seem to be fairly benign. They eat plant matter, Some do emit some chemicals when irritated (picked up for example) but that seems to be fairly mild from a human standpoint, It mentioned discoloration of the skin and possible some itching or burning especially if it got in your eyes for example. You can read about them here if you like.. I would think a shoe applied with the proper force would solve a lot of the problem.:)

I would expect young millipedes would be harvested by birds. Maybe you need to move in a family of meerkats. They love millipedes.:D

Millipedes for sure . I get them in my house ( Louisiana ) every year around this time . Infestation coincides with our rainy season . They also cover the outside walls of my house . I have not found anything that kills or repels them so far . I 've tried different types of ( safe for interior home ) fogging products . I use a vacuum daily to suck them up until the millipede season ends ( about a month ).

we had these here in NE Ga. about 6-7 years ago, we have 2 acres cleared and keep maintained and these buggers were as you said "everywhere" they were climbing the foundation walls, we couldn't walk without stepping on them, literally every few inches on the ground, They stayed around for about 10 days and suddenly over night were gone,
I ask other neighbors if they had them , some answered yes but others never had seen them, and I have not seen them since ever again, though we might be in stor for them as I have noticed the strange little ant hole looking mounds everywhere, about the size of a half golf ball, I seen these back before the last time they hit us,
They'll pass but make a nasty mess while here trying to cope with them, crunching under our shoes and tracking them,

Whats odd though, is this is the first time in 6 years I have seen them. I am sure they were there before, but couldnt have been this bad.

Literally, in a 10' x 10' square in my garage, I could probably count 50 of these little bugars, if not more.

I think they may be cyclical like the cycaidas..l.sp. those loud insects that come every 17 yrs. or so....I know we had a billion millipedes once year and have had none since so that is why I think they may be cyclical....

I have read that they are migrating and when they encounter an obstacle instead of going around they try to go through. We had them two years ago and again now. Whether in the house or carport they always go East.

East huh,

That dont seem to be the case in my garage. EVERY SINGLE morning there are several hundred of them. Most seem to be at the back under the bench and working their way toward the door, thats south to north. But I cant be positive that is the direction they are going. Its pretty random. They each are going a little bit direction.

I also hope their not bad if dogs eat them. I have one dog that loves them. Cleans the floor in the shop every morning and has been doing that for about a week now :confused3:

Seems to me that you should just let the dog take care of them for you.
Might want to cut back on the dog food as bugs have a high fat content and you don't want your dog getting overweight.
Millipedes are fairly benign.
Centipedes on the other hand, can be aggressive and they are supposed to be poisonous, although the ones in the U.S. tend to be too small to pose a danger.

high fat is good. The dog that likes them is too skinny to begin with. Cant seem to get him to fatten up. He has food allergies and has to eat expensive food already. $50 for 30lbs:mur:

I think the dog must be liking them, they are high in protein from what I heard! lol

Must be tasty, LD1 why not add some to your morning cereal and see :D

When we still lived in the city, we had an outbreak of millipedes. The paper said they were always around but we had a wet spring which was driving them out of their hiding places. We only saw them one time in all of our years at the city house. Seems like we had a small invasion where we live now. With as much rain as we have had this spring I would have expected a horde of these things...

Later,
Dan

I just realized I took some pictures the other day and forgot to post them.

You can see how things look in the mornings
