Minimizing rust and corrosion? Whats best?

What do you guys use to spray down the mechanical parts of your machinery to reduce rust and corrosion. Specifically, Im thinking of my Herd seeder. I loaned it out and my buddy used it to throw fertilizer along with his food plot seed. I guess this is ok, he said he washed it out well, but Im thinking Im going to wash it out again (to my standards) and give it a good coating with something to prevent rust. Ive been told to use WD-40, white lithium grease spray, diesel, etc. What do you guys like best for this type of application. Ill be using your advice for all my implements so all advice welcome. thanks

When my equipment is stored under cover, I clean it and give it a light spray of WD40 or trans. fluid. With my fertilizer spreader, after use, I wash it down with a mixture of baking soda and water , from a pump sprayer, hose it off, set in sun to dry and then spray with oil.
Another procedure I have followed is to spray with a light coat of rattlecan spray primer--not enough to stick things together. Much cleaner and will disappear when used next time.

Fluid Film comes highly recommended to prevent corrosion. It comes in spray on or brush on containers.

Fluid film is nice. If money isn't a hindrance buy a 5 gallon pail and spray gun. That stuff should stay on about 6-9months(depends on how often you wash it). I spray my tractor once every six months cause I use it in a salty environment during the winter. Its safe on plastics and most rubber (may cause swelling on natural rubber). If you use corrosive liquids it helps keep the metal safe. I love the stuff. Its better then WD-40 and last alot longer. I use it on all my vehicles, guns, tractor, skid steer. Since I've started using it I haven't seen any rust spots get any bigger. It's safe on hydraulic cylinders and seals.

I take it you are talking about rust prevention for your moving parts? WD40 is ok, but tends to wash off. I work offshore and one thing I've found that works great for items being stored outdoors is LPS-3. It's a spray on grease, and makes a mess, but that stuff won't wash off in the rain, forms a great barrier, and acts as a lubricant.

LPS-3 is my favorite, but always seemed too expensive for large scale coating. WD-40 is cheap, but never seemed to last. Sometimes I've used the Rustoleum red primer, but that tends to build up on some equipment, but is great for a plow or disk. Safe to say I've not found the perfect coating. I see there now are some <$5 anti-corrosion sprays at the big-box stores that are sort of wax-based. Think I'll try those next.

I use Fluid Film on my fertilizer spreader now. After each use I wash it down with water, let dry, and then spray all metal parts with fluid film. Since I started doing this, the rust has not advanced and no new areas have started. Makes it much easier to clean too.
