Mites in Chicken Coop..

I use a duster to apply sevin dust. It's the best way when using the powder type insecticides. I think doing it that way would be better than a liquid spray in the coop or barn. The duster has a can you fill with the dust, and you pump the handle, (like a bicycle pump), to spray the insecticide out of the nozzle on the end. I occasionally dust my workshop and garage with it, then use the gas powered blower to blow the dead roaches and loose dust out a couple days later.
Here's one type of hand duster...

Spray your coop with Malithion.

Then get a 8- 16 oz jar of Vasoline melt it and add around a 1/2 -1 cup of Sevin dust stir well and pour back into jar. Its best if you can find the 10% Sevin dust.

Then go out at night and catch each chicken place a small dab under each wing and at the base of neck and the most important place is right above the vent.Be sure to get it on the skin . Repeat every 3-4 months.

If possible do away with all wood roosts and replace with plastic or PVC.

In the old days when you could still buy Black Leaf 40, life in the chicken coop was a lot simpler.

Have fun --J

So far no mites at our place and we have had chickens for about 10 years. We now have 89 egg laying chickens and one rooster. They do dust bath a lot. We use cedar shavings in the coop and I think this help as cedar it is not bug friendly. They do free range and there are areas outside that even in the winter seem to stay dry and the chickens do their dust bath there. Think the chickens know they have to do a dust bath to keep mites away as I didn't have to teach them. I would try and change the coop bedding often to help keep it under control. Can't tell you about any spray or other treatment as we haven't had to go there. :)

Do you not have to be careful with DE?

Seems like there is two kinds one being allowed around food. The other DE type is supposed to be bad for you to breathe.

I "assume" one would need to use the food grade DE around the chickens?

Later,
Dan

Definitely the Food grade and not the stuff they use in pools. I get it in a 50# bag at the feed store for like $15, Dust my dogs in it:thumbsup:

Mix the Sevin in with the wood ashes and let the birds dust themselves. If you have roosts, a light coating of oil on the rungs will help there.
