I am the proud owner of a new to me used TC21D /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif. I have been searching this site for many months and glad all you guys are on this site. I have learned a great deal about compact tractors from these forums.

I did not buy the rear finish mower that was originally used on the tractor. I figured I would buy a MMM for it and call it a day. Then I called a local dealer and they wanted 2250.00 for a new MMM side discharge. I am not even going to the Big Boss for that one. I have seen some dealers have used mmm or ones that are almost new and I am researching this avenue now.

I have done alot of searching of the threads and I have not found much on MMM rear discharge. Does anyone here mow with one and what are the Pro's and Con's of a MMM rear discharge?

If the MMM rear or side does not come thru I am looking at Land pride 1660 rear finish mower. Are the owners of these mowers happy with the product itself and the way it cuts the grass.

Sorry for the many questions but I am one to research everything to death and I am actually excited to start mowing my 2 1/2 acres this year.

Thanks for all your help in advance!!!

Usually the rear discharge MMM's leave a windrow of cut grass behind, and don't distribute it as well as the side discharge. They are good for mowing where side discharge is a problem, like along a highway or where trimming is needed on both sides. At least that is my experience from knowing people who 'know' and have used both.
So, give it some careful thought before buying, as it may be just what you want.

The rear discharge ones do tend to leave windrows. But some have tried the Gator blades and eliminated some of the windrow. The side is not as apted to leave windrows especially if you lift the shoot some. If you don't mind using Ebay there is one for sale right now.

I have a TC24D with the 60 MMM rear discharge. I'm happy with the quality of the cut - most of the time. If you let the grass get taller than normal it will want to bog the tractor down, when it does this it will leave grass "boogers" where you end up have to clutch and/or raise the deck to keep from stalling the tractor. This can also be a problem in certain types of "natural grasses" /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif or if the grass is extremely wet (not wet as in it just rained or dew but you had 4" of rain last week and the grass sucked it all up /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif). Now the part I do like about it. As you come up to something it doesn't matter what direction you are going, you can mow up next to and close to it. Also don't have to worry about which direction the deck is facing because it isn't blowing clippings (and the rocks or whatever that always magically appear) out the side of the tractor - no more busted siding for me - been there, done that, and had to fix it. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. One last thing, if space is of a premium the rear discharge is a lot narrower because you don't have that big chute sticking out the side.

Thanks for all the info. With the rear discharge does it tend blow grass all over the underside of the tractor?

Yes, but I don't think it's any more than a side discharge does.

I'll echo what others have said - it's nice not to blow the clippings into the flowerbeds, but I have to cut the lawn 2X a week in the spring for the clippings to disappear. I didn't have much luck with the gators with grass, But made the leaves disappear. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have a TC33DA with the 914A 72" mid mount rear discharge mower. I had the dealer install the Gator mulching blades prior to delivery. I only used the mower a few times prior to winter setting in and it did a very good job.

The first cut was of a rough grassy/weedy area (mainly weeds with some grass for looks) that had not been cut in at least 6 weeks with the grass 9”-12” tall. It took three passes but it looked great with almost no clumping after. The neighbor had to sell his Toro garden tractor because it would not cut this type of “lawn” that we have.

I got to cut my new 66,000 s.f. (1 ½ acre) lawn, planted Sept 1st, twice before winter set in. The landscape contractor that installed the lawn included the first three cuttings. The speed and quality of cut was very good. The grass was relatively dry and I cut it during the afternoon but the ground was wet in some areas that held a little more water than others. The weight of the mower deck rutted the lawn a little in these areas but it was minor. I did not have any clumping and the amount of grass “blown up” was very minimal.

I like the ability to cut up to things on both sides and am very pleased with the maneuverability and quality of cut. Although getting the mower deck on and off is tricky, it is worth it in my opinion.

This is telling me you are not floating your deck and allowing it to ride on the wheels. Your deck is not designed to run on the ground fully.

Find your self a real nice level concrete spot. Lower your deck until the wheels just touch to concrete, don't let the weight on them. Then set your 3 point draft a 1/2" lower or right at where your 3 point is. Your deck will do a much nicer job of mowing.
